Happy Christmas From Burrunjor!

I’d like to wish all my regular followers a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Thank you for sticking with me throughout 2016. This blogs popularity has continued to grow throughout this year. It has now reached well over 110 thousand hits. Whilst I will be devoting a lot of my time to my new fiction blog “The Secret Lives of Vampire Killers”, in 2017 I will not forget about this place either and hope to share new content with you very soon.

In the meantime here’s a Christmas Vampire story from my other blog. I only wrote this in a few days so I didn’t have as much time to go over it as I would have liked. Next year I’ll start my festive horror on the first of December.

Still let me know what you think if you have the time and have a fabulous holiday season.

All I Want For Christmas Is Blood

Thanks for reading.

Why Wolverine is The Most Popular X-Man

Wolverine is without question the most popular and iconic member of the Marvel superhero team the X-Men.

He has appeared in every single form of other media that the team has, from films, to animated series, to video games and has carried both his own spin off comic and film series.

In this article I am going to explore why this one particular X-Man stands out from the rest in a more objective way.

He’s Not Too Powerful

Who would have thought that was his weakness.

I think that sometimes a problem with the X-Men is that their powers tend to be too great.

Storm can summon up the lightening, Professor Xavier can take control of people’s minds, Nightcrawler can teleport in at will, and Cyclops can blast people from several feet away. It can be hard to have characters like that ever be in any danger.

Wolverine meanwhile I feel has the right balance. He is not so weak that he can’t fight, but at the same time he can’t just zap his opponents from a distance or teleport away any time someone tries to hurt him. .

Writers will therefore tend to focus on Wolverine more than other characters as its easier to have him be involved in exciting fight scenes. With Storm for instance against an enemy like Sabretooth, either he will get the drop on her and corner her and then she has no chance, or she will see him coming and just zap him.

Also the fact that Wolverine can heal means the writers can have a lot more fun in giving him all kinds of gruesome injuries and he can recover from them, which in one case included having his skeleton ripped out!

At least he wasn’t covered in scorpions this time.

Another advantage of Wolverine’s healing factor is that for people who don’t like Wolverine they can enjoy watching him get shredded, beaten, crushed, his bones broken, over and over again. However for those of us who like Wolverine, we also enjoy watching him get shredded, beaten, crushed, his bones broken over and over again, as he always comes back.

He Has A More Mysterious Backstory

Due to being 150 years old, Wolverine naturally has a much longer backstory to explore than the rest of the team.

The fact that when we first meet him very little of his past is known has also I think made him an attractive characters to both fans and writers alike.

There were so many interesting things to explore when we first get to know Wolverine. How old is he? How did the adamantium get coated to his bones? Why doesn’t he remember his past? Why do he and Sabretooth hate each other so much?

That’s not to say that other members of the team don’t have interesting backstories either. Indeed I think the X-Men as a whole are very well fleshed out characters.

However in Wolverine’s case aspects of his origin can serve as the basis for entire films in their own right, such as the weapon X program which served as the basis for much of X2 and the first Wolverine film.

Its hard to imagine Scott Summers origin being strong enough to carry a film. In X-Men Apocalypse for instance his origin is really only a minor part at the start and then that’s that. He’s joined the team and really is no different to how he is later.

His Feud with Sabretooth

Wolverine is one of the few X-Men alongside Charles Xavier himself who has his own personal archenemy, Sabretooth.

The Wolverine/Sabretooth feud is one of the most brutal in all of comic books, and its also one of the most mysterious. For many years we didn’t even know why these two always hated each other so much, with Sabretooth being suspected of being everything from Wolverine’s brother to his father (though both of these theories were recently debunked).

The fact that their past together is so mysterious is a large part of why it has been so fascinating. What could have provoked such hatred between the two men? Why is Sabretooth so desperate to prove he is superior to Logan.

This along with the unanswered questions about Logan’s long, 100 year past really I think made him more of a natural to star in his own solo series.

Taken out of context, this sounds like a rather odd thing to want do to Sabretooth bub!

Visually He Is Stunning

Wolverine’s design is brilliant in my opinion. On the one hand its not just a monster or a weird animal man like say Nightcrawler, but on the other he is not just an ordinary human with a funny costume. Well okay he does have a funny costume but still his civilian look is part man, part animal and even part machine. There are certain animal characteristics about his looks. Some big like having claws, some subtle like his excess hair, elongated upper canines. At the same time however the fact that the claws are metal add a whole new aspect to his appearance.

The first time you see the character you wonder if he is part machine underneath? The way the Claws can retract back into his body makes it seem like he isn’t completely flesh and blood. It draws you in more than say Storms look and makes you want to know the story behind it.

There is also an element of body horror in his look too the way the knives come bursting from under his skin.

On the one hand it can be a bit uncomfortable to watch, but at the same time, the claws are so striking they draw you in.

He Has A More Complicated Relationship With The Rest Of The Team

I can’t believe they gave up on him so quickly? Then again Magneto does seem to be quite sensitive to criticism.

I think audiences are always drawn to the outsider in any group. You naturally want to know why it is they don’t fit in. Also I think that they often help to stop the other characters from getting on too well with each other.

However somewhat paradoxically whilst Wolverine provides the necessary conflict within the group, at the same time I sometimes feel that being a member of the X-Men means more to Wolverine than the others. He is a loner by nature who has never really fitted in anywhere, but among the X-Men he ironically does find a similar group of outcasts and outsiders that he can belong with. Even though he’ll rarely admit it; the gang mean everything to him which makes his dynamic with them a little bit more interesting to me than just the usual loner who looks down on the rest. Wolverine is at odds with yet dependent on them at the same time.

I think the films did a good job in capturing Logan’s dynamic with the group.

In the first entry of the series, he scoffs at the idea of joining the team and seems to go out of his way to antagonise them. Threatening Cyclops, calling Charles “wheels” etc.

However he stays with them more out of practicality than anything else and soon finds himself developing close relationships with many of the other X-Men. He falls in love with Jean, he comes to see Professor X as a mentor figure, he develops a father/daughter relationship with Rogue, a friendship with Storm. Even with Scott his rival, he develops something of a grudging respect for him. I always quite liked the scene in Days of Future Past where he tells Scott sincerely that he is pleased to see him again.

I think my favourite moment however is in Days of Future Past when he asks a young Xavier to make sure he brings the future X-Men together. Even though the team would endure great loss and heartache (Wolverine arguably most of all as he ends up having to murder the woman he loves!) Wolverine still regards his time with them as being the best and most worthwhile years in his entire life. They were the only people he ever really felt accepted among completely and so despite the problems he may have had with some members like Scott (who he still asks Xavier to recruit.) He honestly wouldn’t want to lose his time with the X-Men for anything, as they were the ones who helped him to rediscover his past, give his life a purpose, and in some ways redeem him.

Thus Wolverine’s dynamic with the others is somewhat more complex.

Hugh Jackman’s Performance

Hugh Jackman as Wolverine is in my and many other people’s opinions one of the all time greatest performances from any actor as a comic book character.

I’d say that Jackman is as good as Wolverine as Sean Connery or Roger Moore were as James Bond. Like those actors he made the role his own. He captured all aspects of Wolverine’s persona. He was badass, he was cocky, he was sarcastic, all the right superficial things we love Wolverine for. But Jackman also managed to capture the characters more vulnerable and caring side in his relationships with Rogue, Jean and Charles.

His Wolverine was the cool guy that we all wanted to be, but he also seemed like a real person rather than just a badass, quip spouting, one note character.

Jackman also I think really threw himself into the role. His enthusiasm for playing the character has remained just as strong for close to 20 years.

Whilst Wolverine was always a fan favourite the fact that the actor they cast for him was the real stand out among the original X-Men cast. (Which was already a stellar cast.) Obviously made him the most popular among general audiences too which in turn to led him taking over the series.

Conclusion

In conclusion you can see why even if he isn’t your personal favourite Wolverine does have a certain appeal that other characters don’t.

His dark mysterious past, his feud with Sabretooth, his complicated relationship with his team mates and the fact that he has been brought to life so successfully on screen have all made him the most popular character.

Of course being a badass with cool metal claws doesn’t hurt either.

Top 10 Witches

Witches are probably the most beloved supernatural creature alongside Vampires. Much like Vampires, they have been portrayed as everything from a teenage fantasy, to misunderstood anti heroes, to campy comic book villains, to the stuff of nightmares!

In this article I am going to run down my own personal favourite Witches. Much like with Vampires I do tend to prefer my Witches to be terrifying creatures of evil.

When they are villainous, Witches are actually the most frightening supernatural creature. Vampires are still my favourites as they are by far the most interesting and fun. However ultimately all a Vampire or a Zombie or a Werewolf for that matter can do is kill you, or make you one of their own.

Witches however through their magic can inflict all kinds of horrific fates worse than death on you. They can curse your soul forever, turn you into a rat, or trap you in a painting!

Still whilst they are undeniably the most frightening, there have been a wide range of Witch characters across many different mediums and in this article I am going to run down my own personal top 10. Let me know what you think in the comments below.

10/ Jadis, The White Witch (The Chronicles of Narnia)

Not her most serious portrayal in The Young Ones but I still enjoyed it.

One of the most iconic evil Witches in all of fiction. Jadis appears as the main antagonist in both The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe and its prequel novel, The Magicians Nephew.

Though she is by far and away more famous for her role in The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. I actually thought she was more effective in The Magicians Nephew. In this story we find out more about her origin, as well as the horrors she inflicted on her own world too, which actually surpassed her later reign of terror in Narnia.

Jadis originally began as an inhabitant of the world Charn, but she destroyed all of its people using a powerful spell when her attempt to seize the throne from her sister failed. She then put herself into a kind of suspended animation. Hoping someone with magic might visit her one day and she could escape her now dead world.

She would be re-awoken hundreds of years later, when two children. Digory and Polly accidentally travelled to Charn using magical rings bestowed to them by Digory’s Uncle Andrew. I was always somewhat scared of this part of the novel as a child. The idea that the Witch would be willing to destroy her own world, rather than lose to her sister really made her into an even more vicious monster. In The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, she was merely a would be conqueror of Narnia, but here she is a full blown omnicidal maniac! Normally in prequels we see a more innocent side to the villain such as in Smallville where we see Lex Luthor go from a decent guy to Superman’s archenemy.

In Jadis’s case however her past was even more horrifying! The White Witch uses Digory and Polly to teleport herself first to earth, before being whisked away by Digory and Polly to another alternate world. Narnia.

Though the ending of The Magician’s Nephew hints that she has been driven away, by the time of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe she has managed to take control of Narnia with an army of monsters. She is later finally slain by the Lion, Aslan in a battle.

The White Witch in many ways was meant to represent Satan in the world of Narnia. At one point in The Magicians Nephew she even tempts Digory with an apple like a serpent in the Garden.

The Witch was unquestionably the best of the villains in any of the Narnia books. She was absolute evil, yet utterly captivating too with all the men of the series falling in love with her they second they set sights on her. Again the fact that she was always described as being so strikingly beautiful is a play on the idea of the Devil being more alluring seemingly than the forces of good.

On screen Jadis was played by Tilda Swindon in the Narnia films, but she has been brought to life on both stage and television many times. Overall not my all time favourite Witch, but still a great villain nonetheless.

9/ Morgana (Merlin)

There have been many different versions of Morgan Le Fey, King Arthur’s evil half sister from Arthurian Legends over the years. Even within the myths themselves her role has varied considerably.

Sometimes she is an outright villain such as the version played by Helen Mirren in Exaclibur, whilst in others such as Helena Bonham Carter’s in the tv miniseries Merlin she is depicted as a more tragic character.

My favourite version however would have to be Katie McGrath’s from the BBC television series Merlin. I liked this interpretation the best because I think they were able to include elements from various different portrayals by having her start off as a heroic character who is driven down a path of villainy. I also feel they made her into a more well rounded character too, as we saw how all of her loyalty and innocence was slowly crushed by her friends and family’s treatment of her.

In this version of the famous story Uther Pendragon has outlawed magic, with anyone who practices it being sentenced to death. Morgana who is his ward regularly fights with him over his treatment of magic users. It is later revealed that this is because she is in fact secretly a Witch herself. In Merlin being a Witch or a Sorcerer is not something you choose. You are born with magic.

At the same time Merlin one of her best friends ends up turning against her, when The Great Dragon tells him of how Morgana is destined to bring about the end of Camelot.

Sadly it ends up being a case of a self fulfilling prophecy as its only because of the Dragons prophecy that Merlin begins to distrust Morgana and push her away. Merlin ends up poisoning her after he suspects she is behind a plot to kill Arthur. Though the Witch Morgause did make her the centre of a spell to help destroy Camelot (which could only be broken if she died) She had no idea that she had been made the centre of the spell and thus was is innocent.

Following this Morgana makes a turn to the dark side and plots to kill Uther, Merlin and later Arthur in order to free her people.

Morgana is essentially a female, magical version of Magneto from the X-Men . She’s part of a group of people who can’t help the way they were born, but because of their power everyone else despises them and tries to either control them or in some cases wipe them out. Morgana and Magneto are among the only two who finally decide that they have had enough and fight back against their oppressors. However in a magnificent irony they both end up going to far and become no different to the people persecuting them.

The only problems with Morgana’s character were primarily that she suffered from overuse in the later years. Being the only villain in the show, she was featured in almost every episode of the 4th and 5th series with a new plot to kill Arthur every week. This had a rather unfortunate side effect of making her seem more like a live action Wile Coyote than anything else. Also I felt that her version of Professor X, Merlin was too weak.

Merlin started out as an interesting character, but at the end of the show because Arthur never brought magic back (which he was prophesied to.) Then Merlin ended up looking like a traitor who supported two regimes that persecuted his kind!

The whole point of a Magneto, Morgana character is that the Professor X character serves as the peaceful alternative who breaks the cycle of hate and finds a way for everyone to live together. Here sadly as Merlin never did that, Morgana actually ends up looking like the hero who tried to save her kind.

Still overall Morgana was an interesting and menacing villain, and Katie McGrath who played her was truly excellent in the role. The popularity of her performance in this series would lead to a highly successful career for McGrath in genre films and television series such as Dracula,  Slasher, Jurassic World and Supergirl. She will also be appearing in another adaptation of Arthurian legends in 2017, Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur Legend of the Sword. She’s really a genre queen now thanks to Morgana.

8/ Maleficent (Sleeping Beauty)

The main antagonist from the 1959 Disney classic, Sleeping Beauty. She is based on the un named evil fairy Godmother from the original story of the same name by the Brothers Grimm and Charles Perrault.

Unlike most other evil Witches, such as the Wicked Witch from The Wizard of Oz or the child eating Witch from Hansel and Gretel. Malificent was not depicted as being a repulsive old hag, but she still had a somewhat unsettling aspect to her appearance. Her bright green skin and her massive horns gave her a somewhat reptilian look which was a nice foreshadowing of the climax of the movie when she changes into a gigantic fire breathing Dragon!

Though not entirely original to the source material, Malificent has gone on to appear in numerous other works over the years including video games and television series such as Once Upon A Time. A 2014 remake simply called Malificent attempted to flesh her character out and present her as more of an anti hero. Malificent in this movie was played by Angelina Jolie who won great praise for her performance. However personally the definitive portrayal for me will always be the original, Eleanor Audley.

Whilst Malificent may not be the most frightening Witch her unique look and commanding presence make her one of Cinema’s most memorable Witches and villains in general.

7/ Regina, The Evil Queen (Once Upon A Time)

One of the main antagonists/protagonists from Once Upon A Time. Regina is based on the Evil Queen from the Snow White fairy tale. Her origins are naturally somewhat expanded on to make her more sympathetic.

In the original fairy tale the Evil Queen grows jealous that Snow White is prettier than her, whilst in this version a young Snow White inadvertently causes the death of Regina’s one true love, which along with her cruel mother Cora’s influence turns her into a monster.

Regina starts out as the series main villain, but even from the start we see there as a softer side to her as above else she does still genuinely love her adopted son Henry.

Gradually over the course of the series we see Regina overcome her dark side and eventually become a heroic character, though she still has the odd relapse now and again. Its true that Regina has been somewhat over used over the course of the series. She is a big favourite of the writers who at one point were quoted as saying that whenever they think up a new story. The first thing they think of is “how can we get Regina involved in this?”

Still despite this, the characters interesting history, poisonous relationship with her mother, complex rivalry with Snow and above all else, Lana Parilla’s brilliant performance have all helped Regina to stand out as something special.

6/ Queen Bavmorda (Willow)

The main antagonist from the 1988 George Lucas film Willow. She was played by Jean Marsh, who also played the head stealing Witch from Return to Oz and would later go on to play the evil Morgana in the Doctor Who story Battlefield. She had a real knack for playing evil Witches!

There’s not much to Bavmorda’s character. Just another evil monarch who plans to kill the child prophecized to overthrow her.

However Jean Marsh’s performance really elevates her to being an all time classic fantasy villain. She really gives  the character a lot of presence and menace. I’d say she steals the film as much as Tim Curry’s portrayal of Darkness does in Legend. Whenever you think of both movies its their performances that first spring to mind.

5/ Muriel, (Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters)

The main villain and evil queen of the Witches from Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters. Muriel is played by Famke Janssen who much like Jean Marsh is a natural at playing all powerful villains. Shes blown Patrick Stewart to pieces, and tortured Owen Wilson almost to death. If anyone knew how to bring the most evil and destructive Witch to life then it was her.

Muriel is a much more brutal Witch than many other famous on screen Wicca’s. She pulls her victims to bits with branches, and force feeds them maggots which make them explode.

Her death is also fittingly more brutal too. She is stabbed, beaten to within an inch of her life, hung from the ceiling, and decapitated with a shovel!

Whilst mainstream critics may have savaged the film, I personally loved Hansel and Gretel:Witch Hunters. I think it was nice to see a return to more evil, brutal witches and Janssen’s Grand High Witch was the perfect antagonist for the re-imagined duo.

4/ The Wicked Witch of the West (The Wizard of Oz)

THE iconic, green skinned, big nosed, ugly Witch from popular culture. The Wicked Witch ironically was more of a minor antagonist in the original Oz book series by L Frank Baum. The main villain was always the Nome King (who did finally appear on screen in the movie Return to Oz).

Still thanks to the classic 1939 MGM adaptation where the Witch was played by Margaret Hamilton, the Witch has become the most famous villain from the series.

She has gone on to appear in multiple adaptation of the Oz books over the years. Much like with Malificent some portrayals have even attempted to make her more sympathetic such as the novel Wicked and the recent film Oz The Great and Powerful where the Witch was played by Mila Kunis.

Still once again the classic Witch will always be Margaret Hamilton’s, sneering at a young Judy Garland “I’ll get you my pretty and your little dog too”.

She’s not the most formidable Witch granted. She can be killed by a bucket of water! Still her devilishly wicked sense of humour and her over the top appearance really do make her the ideal villain for the imaginative and surreal world of Oz.

3/ Willow Rosenberg (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel)

A character that embodies the best qualities of the good and bad portrayals of Witches. Willow was also easily the best developed character across the entirety of Buffy along with Spike.

We see her go from a young, bullied, shy damsel in distress, to a strong, capable, intelligent woman, to a fearsome Witch, to a magic addict, to the most dangerous enemy Buffy has ever faced, to hero who changes the world for good.

When you look at the Willow in the first episode cowering at the sight of a punk ass Vampire. It doesn’t even seem like the same character as the all powerful Wicca ripping the skin off of Warren Mears in season 6, but when you watch the show all the way through you can see how they develop Willow to that moment perfectly.

By far and away Willow’s greatest two Witchy moments are when she takes on Glory a hell goddess and when she avenges her lover Tara Maclay, by literally flaying Warren alive. Its pretty cool to take on a goddess, even for a Witch and even Muriel never went as far as to flay someone alive. Not that Warren didn’t have it coming.

2/ The Halliwell Sisters (Charmed)

By far the greatest heroic Witches. The Halliwell sisters were the main protagonists in Charmed. They consisted of Prue, Piper, Phoebe and later Paige.

In some respects the Charmed ones were a similar concept to the Slayers from Buffy. The chosen female heroes whose role was to fight Demons, and who were guided by a rigid organisation (Whitelighters, Watchers).

Still the Charmed ones carved out their own identity quickly. All 4 actresses were excellent, but what really made the show was their strong chemistry with one another (even with the alleged behind the scenes feuding.)

If I had to pick a favourite then it would be Prue. I always liked Prue’s deadpan, dry sense of humour and her no nonsense attitude to slaying Demons when compared with her more vulnerable sisters.

Still whilst Prue was my favourite, the show did manage to go on without her for another 5 years, as the dynamic of the three Witches fighting evil was very strong regardless. On the one hand it was a classic supernatural story, but on the other it was also a very human story of three sisters sticking by each other through the worst circumstances.

1/ The Grand High Witch (The Witches)

The Grand High Witch is to Witches what the Reapers are to Vampires. It is the darkest, most hideous interpretation imaginable.

Vampires and Witches can be alluring, or repulsive. On the one hand there is something attractive about the idea of being a Vampire or a Witch. An immortal, sexy, super powered badass, or someone with brilliant, magical powers. Thus not surprisingly many writers have capitalised on that and turned them into teenage fantasies, like Twilight or Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

However at the same time they are also legitimately horrifying ideas too. Something that is dead returning to feast on the blood of innocent people, or a person with the power to twist the natural world to its will.

Thus some writers have obviously capitalised on this and used the idea of Witches and Vampires to create the most frightening monsters. Again personally I prefer the latter interpretation.

I think its safe to say Sabrina portrayed Witches in a more glamorous way.

The Witches in both Roald Dahl’s novel, simply called The Witches and the 1990 film adaptation are hideous Demons who torture and murder children using their magic.

I am not going to lie this scene absolutely terrified me.  Poor Erica, being trapped in a painting of one tiny little farm house for the rest of her life. She got it even worse than Georgie in IT.

The Grand High Witch, their leader is the most evil and fearsome of all the Witches. It must take a lot to be the most disgusting creature in a room full of evil child killing Demons!

In the novel she is actually described as being very short and having hideous rotting skin and long dark hair. This was changed in the film when Anjelica Houston was cast and the Witch was made into a physically imposing, more Demonic looking beast.

Personally I think that this change was for the better. I remember the first time I saw the Witches when Anjelica Huston first appeared on screen, I thought she was absolutely gorgeous, and then this happened.

It was proper nightmare fuel! I think this was more effective than to simply try and make the Witch always look alluring or always hideous. Here the movie created a real sense of paranoia. Literally anyone could be the Witch. Even the most glamorous looking person could tear their face off and transform into the most nightmarish monster.

Anjelica Huston was absolutely sensational in the role too. I’d rank her performance as the Witch alongside that of any of the great horror actors like Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing’s greatest performances as characters like Dracula and Victor Frankenstein.

She holds nothing back in playing an utterly vile and loathsome character. There has never been a more evil woman on screen than Anjelica Huston as the Witch and that’s why I’d rank her as my favourite Witch.

Thanks for reading.

The History of the Daleks Part 2: Masters of Time and War with The Movellans

The second phase of Daleks history. For many years it was believed that the Dalek race had come to an end in the Dalek civil war. The last Dalek chronicle discovered in the 1960’s by David Whitaker said that the creatures had seemingly been driven to extinction, when their archenemy the Doctor kicked off a war between the humanized and regular Daleks.

In the 1970’s however Terry Nation discovered yet another Dalek chronicle (which also coincided with supposed sightings of Daleks at a peace conference.) A small sensation began around the creatures once again and the hunt for many more cubes would soon continue for the rest of the decade.

Whilst it was always known that the Daleks had time travel abilities these cubes helped shed some light on how they had been able to truly master the 4th dimension. They also gave further details on how our future would be entwined with these metallic monsters.

By Petronella Osgood

The End of The War

The end of the war that nearly exterminated the Dalek race forever.

The Dalek civil war had gone on for many years. Their entire city had been levelled, the Emperor’s casing had been destroyed and millions of Daleks had been exterminated. Nevertheless by the end of long and bloody conflict the non humanised Daleks were finally beaten and thus the “pure” Daleks could begin rebuilding their city as well as restarting their war against all other life forms.

The Emperor had survived even though his casing had been destroyed. Nevertheless he was placed on a life support machine and would be out of action for many years, during which time a Supreme council was established to rule the Daleks in the Emperors place. The Supreme Council was led by a large black and gold Dalek named the Dalek Supreme.

The Dalek Supreme, leader of the Daleks whilst the Emperor was recovering.

Not all of the humanised Daleks had been destroyed. A small group ironically lead by the very original humanised Daleks, Alpha, Beta and Omega had managed to flee Skaro, eventually settling out of the regular Daleks reach on the planet Kyrol.

One humanised Dalek meanwhile was allowed to live among the regulars. Though infected with human DNA this Dalek nevertheless sided with the regular Daleks. It wished to gain power for itself and it longed to be a part of a race as powerful as the Daleks had once been. It did have human emotions, but they were emotions such as greed and personal ambition. The very worst human emotions.

It betrayed the other humanised Daleks, which ultimately is what led to their defeat and became a part of the regular Dalek race. The Dalek did not let on to the rest of its kind that it was humanised, fearing that they would either exterminate him or recondition him. It also secretly plotted to take control from the Supreme council.

Eventually however as the Daleks began to expand outwards from Skaro this humanised Dalek would soon discover that it enjoyed inflicting pain on lesser life forms. The Daleks had always tortured their victims, but it had only ever been to break their spirit or for information. They did not take an active pleasure in it as the concept of joy or happiness was alien to them. This humanised Dalek however however relished in torturing his victims as he, due to his humanity could experience emotions such as happiness. Nothing made him happier than protracting his enemies suffering for as long as he possibly could.

Eventually he would rise to the rank of Dalek Inquister general and would later be put in charge of the Dalek death camps. The Dalek Supreme appointed him this position due to his brutality. Though he was a little surprised at his behaviour, he nevertheless believed that the Dalek was useful in provoking fear among their enemies.

The humanised Dalek would later give itself a name to further inspire fear among its enemies. Dalek X

Dalek X described as “the devil in Dalek form” was a true monster that combined the very worst elements of the human and Dalek races.

The fact that Dalek X took a name caused the other Daleks to look on it with suspicion but it did not matter to Dalek X who had risen up the ranks to the point where he answered only to the Supreme Dalek. Even the Supreme Dalek did not like Dalek X, but again he kept him around because he realised how useful he was in inspiring fear.

It was the worst nightmare of every creature in the galaxy to end up in Dalek X’s torture chambers.

Dalek X would be placed in a harder casing which reflected his rank, and he had a massive claw attachment with which he could use to disembowel his victims and tear them apart.

The New Dalek empire was small. At first after rebuilding their city they could only conquer small primitive planets. One such world was Spirodon. Though conquering Spirodon proved a little bit more problematic due to the fact that the inhabitants were invisible the Daleks ultimately managed to conquer the planet by launching a plague missile onto the surface of Spirodon. The Daleks had the cure to the plague and thus the Spirodons were forced to surrender. The Daleks would force them to wear cloaks in order to identify them.

The Daleks also conquered another race during this time the savage and ape like Ogrons.

The Ogrons and the Spirodons. Among the first races to fall before the new Dalek empire.

The Daleks simply did not have the power to take on highly advanced races including even humanity who now had a massive space faring empire.

The Dalek Supreme believed that the Daleks due to the war had fallen behind their main enemies such as humanity. He feared that they might never be able to catch up to them again. Thus he decided to change the course of Dalek history itself.

The Daleks once again on the Dalek Supreme’s orders would begin to pour all of their efforts into time travel experiments. They kept many of the lesser races they had conquered alive as they needed all the slave labour they could get. They mined worlds like Spirodon and the planet of the Ogrons for all they were worth to build their new and improved time machines.

Their scientists also began building machines that they hoped could extract other time vessels from the vortex. It ran along the same principal as the one they had earlier used to track the Doctor’s TARDIS throughout time and space. They obviously hoped to try and extract the Doctor from the vortex and exterminate him.

The Second Invasion of Earth

During their second occupation of earth the Daleks come face to face with an old enemy.

The Daleks soon discovered what looked like an alternate time line to the current one. Paradoxically existing side by side with the one they inhabited. In this time line earth appeared to be a barren world 100 years before the Daleks first invasion. The Daleks tried to break into this alternate time which proved to be very difficult. Indeed most of their ships that tried perished in the vortex.

What the Daleks discovered was that there are a near infinite number of timelines that can spring from a single moment. Obviously only one comes to pass, but these alternate time lines can still be found if one were to travel through the vortex. Almost like ghosts, these time lines could be made to happen, if one were to make changes at the right points. Actually being able to view these alternate timelines even in the vortex was said to be a one in a billion chance.

One group of Daleks led by a gold Dalek who was the second in command of the Supreme Council managed to break their way into the alternate time and the alternate earth. They discovered that there were very few humans left in this alternate timeline.

In this version of events mankind had been involved in a third world war which had virtually destroyed most of the life on the planet. Only a few humans remained and they were easily conquered by the relatively small Dalek task force, and their Ogron servants, who had journeyed through the vortex with them.

With this alternate earth under their control suddenly this alternate time became the dominant one. For whatever reason the Daleks invading the earth had now completely changed the course of human history.

Now mankind rather than following the original history where they had become a major space power, and then were conquered by the Daleks, but eventually managed to repel them, instead followed this alternate version where mankind in the later part of the 20th century became involved in a third world war that eventually destroyed all life on earth apart from a few desperate groups of people before ultimately being conquered by the Daleks.

Thus the Daleks had succeeded in changing their history for the better. In the new time line these Daleks on earth soon contacted the other Daleks who were spreading their empire across the universe.

These Daleks were Zolfian and Yarvelling’s Daleks and different to the Daleks who were ruling the earth. Nevertheless the Daleks who ruled the earth did not attack them as they were outnumbered. Instead they told them to free the other Daleks who were trapped under the bunker. Eventually Davros’s Daleks who were able to reproduce through cloning several million Daleks within a day; were able to outnumber Zolfian and Yarvellings Daleks and just like in the original timeline force them to become like them.

The unified Dalek race in this time line aided by unique resources that only the planet earth could provide create new and powerful weapons and used them to conquer more planets. The Dalek Empire grew and grew and soon overwhelmed the entire mutters spiral and the whole Andomeda galaxy and many more solar systems and planets. Their empire came to dwarf even the Sontaran empire.

Earth remained under the control of the original Daleks and their Ogron servants. Mankind was hearded up into work camps and forced to help mine the resources out of the planet. They suffered terribly with the Daleks being even more brutal than the last time they had occupied the earth in an effort to completely and utterly prevent another uprising.

Their brutality however reached such a point that their human prisoners began to die from various means, being tortured, starvation, dehydration, exhaustion etc. Thus in order to prevent this from happening, as the Daleks still needed them as a slave force the Daleks began to use human beings to help police their labour camps. These human beings were called controllers and though they were treated better than the people in the labour camps (who were still even with the controllers were treated appallingly) they were nothing more than superior slaves themselves.

The gold Dalek known as the Chief Dalek was the ruler of the earth.

The Daleks ruled over the earth for many years and despite their attempts at crushing humanity a resistance movement did spring up. These rebels were largely ineffective however and it soon became apparent to them that they would never be able to drive the Daleks from their home planet. Thus ironically much like the Daleks before them they sought to change their own history.

They heard from their spies that the Daleks had time travel technology.

Some of their spies had managed to infiltrate the Dalek high command by taking the place of their human servants that policed the camps. With one of these spies managing to get some small pieces of time travel technology and even some weapons to the rebels, the rebels travelled back to the 20th century in the hopes of changing things for the better. The third world war that had caused the end of human civilisation had been started by a man named Sir Reginald Styles.

Styles had been a politician who gathered all of the worlds leaders together for a peace conference to try and prevent a war. Unfortunately he was in fact a maniac who blew up his house where the peace conference was being held, killing all of the world leaders and himself. The rebels wanted to kill Styles before he could do this.

Little did they know that they were playing straight into the Daleks hands. The Dalek scientists back on Skaro had discovered what had caused the alternate timeline to become the main one. It was ironically the rebels themselves. When they travelled back to kill Styles one of their number had detonated a bomb in Styles house unknowingly whilst the peace conference had been going on.

Ironically it was actually he who killed all of the delegates and kick started the war not Styles after all. History had simply recorded it as being Styles as no one was aware of the presence of the rebel whose name was Shura, but Styles had in fact been a good man after all who could have prevented the war.

This had been why when the Daleks arrived they caused the alternate time to become the main one as their presence on earth is ultimately what caused the humans to travel backwards in time and kill styles and unknowingly kick off the third world war that changed human history for the worse and Dalek history for the better.

The Daleks allowed the human agent (whom they had spotted quickly) to give the time travel technology to the humans and allowed the humans to think they had outsmarted them. They still sent a squad of lumbering Ogrons back to fight them in Styles time however so as not to make the human rebels suspicious that the Daleks wanted them to kill Styles.

The Daleks plan would have most certainly worked and they would have continued to rule over the earth had it not been for their archenemy, the Doctor.

The Doctor at that point had been exiled to earth by his own people the Time Lords. Being forced to work with UNIT an organisation designed to track down extra terrestrial threats to mankind, the Doctor and UNIT would soon be called in to investigate Styles house when there were reports of ghosts and ape men around the premises.

The Doctor and his assistant Jo Grant soon discovered that the ghosts were in fact the rebels from the future and the ape men were the Ogrons. After a stand off with the rebels, Jo Grant was accidently sent forward into the future.

Arriving back in the Daleks base, the Doctor soon followed the rebels back to their own time to try and find her. Horrified to see the earth under the control of the Daleks, at first the Daleks did not recognise their old enemy as he had regenerated since he last met them.

Their controller soon informed them however of a member of the rebels called Doctor. With the mere mention of the name being enough to send them into a panic, the creatures proceeded to torture the man they suspected of being the Doctor. Though he held out for several hours eventually the torture became too much and he cracked and the Daleks were able to discover that he was their greatest enemy after all.

The Doctor is tortured by the Daleks in the future.

The Gold Dalek prepared to kill the Doctor but the Controller managed to convince him not to. The Controller said to the Gold Dalek that he could get information about the rebels from the Doctor. Though the Gold Dalek said that he would force the Doctor to talk through torture the Controller pointed out that he had already almost tortured the Doctor to death just simply getting his identity from him and that he would most likely die before he told them anything.

He assured the Gold Dalek that he could find out more about the human rebels and what exactly they knew about the time paradox, whether they knew not to kill Styles or not thanks to the Doctor.

The Gold Dalek reluctantly agreed to release the Doctor for one hour into the Controllers care after which if he did not get any information from him then he would resume his torture of the Doctor.

The Doctor refused to tell the Controller anything. He held the Controller in the utmost contempt declaring that he was a traitor to his kind. The Controller however argued that he was doing all he could to help his kind. He said that no one could fight the Daleks as they were simply too powerful but that he was making things easier for the people in their camps. He even argued that he had saved lives.

The rebels meanwhile soon launched an attack on the Dalek’s base. With the Daleks having not been expecting this they were caught completely off guard. Even then though most of the rebels were still killed, but they nevertheless managed to rescue Jo and the Doctor, who despite his disdain for him prevented the rebels from killing the Controller.

With the Doctor in the custody of the rebels the Daleks now began to genuinely worry that the rebels could erase their version of history. They ordered the Controller to capture the Doctor and warned him that if he failed them again he would be exterminated.

The Doctor meanwhile soon worked out that it was the rebels who had actually created their own timeline and quickly left with Jo to try and find a way to correct history.

Unfortunately he was soon ambushed by a gang of Ogrons lead by the Controller. Fortunately the Controller soon released the Doctor. He came to believe that the Doctor could stop the Daleks as the only time he had ever seen the Daleks scared was when the Doctor was mentioned. He also felt he owed the Doctor as the Doctor had spared his life.

The Controller was subsequently killed for his treachery by the Gold Dalek himself. His last words were a defiant “who knows I may have helped to exterminate you!”

Realising that the Doctor was planning to change history, the Gold Dalek decided to travel back to kill Styles and the Delegates himself.

Fortunately the Doctor managed to get back before him and warned Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge Stewart of the Daleks impending attack. The Brigadier managed to get all of the delegates and Styles himself to safety whilst the UNIT troops led by Sergeant Benton and Mike Yates tried to fight off the Dalek and Ogron squad that had arrived.

The UNIT soldiers proved to be no match for the Daleks despite outnumbering them greatly and the Daleks proceeded to slaughter their way through them.

The Daleks exterminate their way through UNIT’s forces effortlessly.

The Doctor meanwhile had managed to convince Shura not to explode the bomb, however as soon as Shura saw the Daleks arriving he asked the Doctor to let the Daleks into the house so that he could use the bomb himself. With Styles and the others long gone the Doctor reluctantly agreed to allow Shura to sacrifice himself.

The Brig soon called his men the few who were left to flee and the Daleks entered the house expecting to find Style’s and the Delegates instead they found Shura who quickly detonated the bomb killing the entire Dalek squad.

With Style’s and the rest of the Delegates saved, the conference went ahead as planned and history was restored to its rightful course where there was no World War 3 and the Dalek invasion of earth was ultimately repelled.

Though the Daleks were foiled it had been at a great cost. So many young men had been butchered by the Daleks that there were enquiries into Brigadier Lethbridge Stewart’s competency as the head of UNIT. His superiors wondered why he had lost so many men against such a few aliens. None of them were of course aware just how much more dangerous the Daleks were than anything UNIT had faced before, and sadly the Dalek invasion would remain a huge stain on the Brigadier’s career and reputation for many years to come.

Losing so many young men to just a few Daleks would haunt Lethbridge Stewart for many years to come.

The Gold Dalek meanwhile was in fact the only survivor of the attack. It had been badly damaged by the explosion, but its much more durable casing would allow it to ultimately survive. Low on power of the blast UNIT believed the Gold Dalek to be dead and placed its supposedly dead body alongside the other pieces of Dalek tech and remains from the attack in the black archive.

Unfortunately whilst in the archive the Gold Dalek managed to steal a piece of alien time travel technology.

Knowing that it was too low on power to try and use any of the alien technology in there to conquer the planet, it managed to make one trip using the time travel tech back to its own time on Skaro.

There its casing was repaired and it proceeded to share with the Dalek Supreme how their invasion had been foiled as well as the knowledge of the Doctors new face.

With time having been reversed the Daleks still continued on with their time travel experiments.

Working With The Master

The Doctors two greatest enemies meet.

Eventually they found a way to extract another time vessel from the vortex. Unfortunately for them it was not the Doctors. They instead snatched that of the Master another renegade time lord.

Even the Master found himself helpless against the Daleks

The Daleks initially believed the Master to be the Doctor who had simply changed his face again. The Master however assured them that that was not the case and that he could help them.

The Dalek Supreme was highly skeptical, but the Master managed to prove what he said by giving them vital knowledge and equipment something the Doctor would never do under even the most extreme circumstances.

The Master told the Daleks all about his own people the time lords. This had been the first time the Daleks had ever found out about the time lords having never known anything about the Doctors race before. The Master in order save his own life shared many of the secrets of the time lords with the Daleks and gave them access to highly advanced Time Lord technology which allowed their empire to expand forwards conquering more advanced worlds.

The Daleks also learned of fixed points and moments that were in a flux thanks to the Master. Fixed points are moments that always have to happen. If you were to try and change them directly then you would create a cosmic catastrophe. However moments that were in a flux were weak points, chinks in the chain of times armour that if you were to exploit them then you could change history. For instance the Second World War is a fixed point. If you went back and shot Hitler in 1939 then you would be breaking a fixed point, but if you went back to many centuries earlier and killed one of his ancestors when time was in a flux then you could erase Hitler and thus possibly the second world war itself from history.

This knowledge would come in very useful for future Dalek incursions into earth and other planets past.

Within a few decades the Dalek Empire was a force to be reckoned with again thanks in a large part to the Master and soon the Daleks set their sights on their old enemy, humanity.

The Master again in a further effort to save his life (the Master who was the Daleks prisoner was always having to come up with new ways to prove he was useful to them to avoid extermination) promised them that he could cripple humanity all on his own.

The Master would play on humanities fear of a rival power the Draconians. The Draconians were a race of intelligent reptiles. They had forged a mighty empire through space too and they had very nearly gone to war with humanity. Both races however had now established a frontier in space, but things were still very tense between them.

The Master planned to exploit this by sending Ogrons to attack both Earth and Draconian ships. Thanks to a hypnotic fear device the Master had constructed the humans would see the Ogrons as Draconians and the Draconians would see them as humans, causing both sides to think that they were attacking each other.

The Master hoped that this would provoke a war after which the Daleks could emerge and take over easily. Whilst the Daleks allowed the Master to carry out this plan they also had their own master plan for attacking the earth and Draconian Empire’s.

On Spiridon which had become their second main base of operations after Skaro itself the Dalek scientists had been busy trying to create a plague so lethal that virtually no life could survive coming into contact with it. In addition to this the Daleks were also preparing an army of several thousand Daleks beneath the planet to attack other worlds. Finally as if that wasn’t enough the Daleks were also planning to master the secret of invisibility too from the Spiridons.

Unfortunately for the Daleks and the Master, their archenemy the Doctor would soon arrive alongside Jo Grant, with his exile to earth having since been lifted by the time lords after he defeated Omega.

The Doctor initially was caught up the escalating conflict between the Draconians and the human race, but eventually he was able to convince both the Draconian emperor and the Earth President that there was a third party trying to provoke a conflict between them. Unfortunately however in order to fully convince the people of both planets and prevent a war the Doctor had to to get proof and so he and a group of earth men and the prince of Draconia searched for the Ogron planet.

Though they managed to find it, the Master who also held Jo Grant prisoner was able to successfully lure the Doctor into a trap where he was captured by the Daleks. The Doctor had not known that the Master was working with the Daleks and was genuinely caught off guard when they arrived. Though many members of the earth team were gunned down in cold blood the Draconian Prince and the leader of the crew managed to escape as did the Doctor and Jo, who quickly made their way to the TARDIS which the Master had on the planet. The Master however was able to injure the Doctor by shooting him with an Ogron blaster just before he managed to escape. Before he blacked out the Doctor managed to send a telepathic message to the Celestial Intervention Agency on Gallifrey.

The CIA had heard stories about the Daleks before but they had dismissed them as just another race of would be conquerors and many of them were unaware that they had returned after the Dalek Civil war. After hearing the Doctors message the time lords soon began to look into an alternate time where the Daleks where able to launch the plague they were creating on Spiridon as well as master the secret of invisibility. In this time line the Daleks completely and utterly exterminated the human race, as well as the Draconians and billions of other species across the entire Galaxy.

Feeling that they could not turn a blind eye to such destruction, the CIA guided the Doctors TARDIS towards Spiridon in order to prevent this alternate time line from happening.

Unfortunately when the TARDIS landed on this hostile planet the Doctor was completely unconscious and Jo unaware of where they had landed left to get help for him.

Spiridon was inhabited by hostile vegetation life that poisoned Jo. With her hand literally beginning to rot, Jo was soon discovered by a group of Thals who took her into their ship to protect her.

The Thals had spent many centuries living underground. Having built up a full society the Thals for many years were unaware of what was going on above they were too scared too take on the Daleks. Ironically in doing so they missed a golden opportunity to take the monsters out when they were weak during the Dalek civil war.

After several years however the Thals would finally muster up the courage to launch an attack on the Daleks again. Below the ground they had been able to intercept transmissions across space. The Daleks had absolutely no idea that the Thals had survived and those the Thals initially were able to work in secret. The Thals were later able to discover space travel by capturing two Dalek ships which they were later able to construct two crude replica’s of that they sent to Spiridon.

They knew from the Dalek transmissions that they had a base there where they were planning to create a plague that could potentially destroy billions of worlds.

The Dalek city on Spiridon

The first Thal ship had crashed on Spiridon where it had been quickly detected by the Daleks who though surprised to see that Thals had survived nevertheless sent a Dalek death squad to find it.

The Thals meanwhile rescued the Doctor from the TARDIS that was also being attacked by hostile vegetation life. Unfortunately with Jo left behind in the Thal ship the Daleks soon found it and prepared to destroy it. The Doctor having heard that the Jo was still in there pleaded with the Daleks not to, but they naturally ignored his pleas and shot him, though they only stunned him as they wished to interrogate him further.

The two Daleks then proceeded to completely destroy the Thal space craft, literally melting it into nothing with their death rays.

The Daleks took the Doctor deep into their city for questioning but he soon managed to escape with the aid of another Thal prisoner.

Little did the Doctor know that Jo Grant had in fact been rescued by a Spiridon named Wester. Wester had been part of a resistance movement and not only did he pull Jo from the ship before the Daleks destroyed it but he also gave her a cure for the poison that was slowly killing her.

The Doctor meanwhile would soon be rescued from the city by both Thal teams with the second having now landed on Spiridon too. Though there were some casualties along the way.

The Doctor managed to sneak back into the city with a group of Thals by using the Spiridon’s cloaks going in disguise as the Spiridons whilst another Thal hid inside a Dalek casing.

Unfortunately it didn’t take long for the Daleks to notice their ruse and the Doctor and his Thal allies were forced to go on the run. Wester meanwhile heroically sacrificed himself to stop the Daleks. Just as the Daleks has finished creating their plague Wester opened it before they could immunise themselves.

In order to prevent the plague from wiping out the rest of their kind out, these two Daleks were forced to seal themselves in the room where they had created it to prevent the virus which was air borne from escaping. Thus they were trapped and with them the secrets of the Daleks new plague they had spent years creating.

The Doctor meanwhile aided by the Thals and Jo was able to place a bomb near an Ice Volcano which was next to the Dalek base. This subsequently caused the Volcano to erupt burying their entire army and destroying their base too causing them to lose all of their secrets of invisibility as well.

The Dalek Supreme had arrived on Spiridon to oversee the final phase of the operation, but unfortunately for him the Thals were able to steal his spacecraft and leave him and his followers stranded on the planet whilst the Doctor and Jo managed to slip away in the TARDIS.

The Dalek Supreme was unhappy with his subordinates failure.

The Daleks plans to destroy both Draconia and earth had ended in a disaster for them. Not only had they failed to use their plague, but both Earth and Draconia had now been alerted to their presence and whilst the Master had hoped to pit them against one another, his plan had ultimately brought them closer together than ever before.

Both empires soon waged war on the Daleks, and began the Great Dalek war.

The Great Dalek War

The Daleks are forced to go to war against their old enemy humanity a second time.

The Great Dalek War was one of the bloodiest events in the history of our Galaxy. It saw the destruction of thousands of worlds and and the massive civilian and military casualties. It lasted for centuries and whole generations who never knew what it was like to live under peaceful times came and went during the conflict. It is believed that over 200 billion humans alone were killed in the conflict, though some estimates place the figure even higher!

Though the Daleks plans to provoke a war and use the a new virus to exterminate all life in the galaxy had failed their army was still strong enough to take on the Earth and Draconian empires, due to the many worlds they had since conquered and the advanced technology they had been given by the Master.

The Master throughout the early years of the war still continued to help the Daleks. Eventually however as time went on he began to grow more and more scared that the Daleks would dispose of him and eventually he betrayed them. He secretly contacted humanity and gave them vital secrets about the Daleks defences. This allowed humanity to bombard the planet Skaro with bombs. During the bombardment the Master was able to escape to his TARDIS which he used to flee Skaro.

The Gold Dalek who had been monitoring the Masters activities the entire time had failed to notice his treachery and demanded he be tracked down and exterminated.

Unfortunately for the Daleks the Master having had time to study their technology had found a way to block the Daleks from tracking him. The Doctor had similarly found a way to block them chasing him which was why they had not been able to do so again and why they had snagged the Master’s TARDIS instead as it was the only time vessel they could detect in the vortex.

However whilst they were unable to snag the current Master they were able to catch a future incarnation of the time lord. This version of the Master had lost his TARDIS and was on his own and vulnerable.

With no way of protecting himself the Daleks were able to capture him easily. The Daleks had found a way to track individual time travellers as the Daleks had learned to track background radiation that is only found in the vortex and that time travellers pick up. Whilst the Master had found a way to block this too, unfortunately the Master at this point had nothing to protect himself.

Again The Master attempted to bargain with them and the Daleks decided to put him on trial to see whether or not it was worth keeping him around for his useful knowledge. Ultimately as his betrayal had led to a significant drawback for the Daleks they decided to kill him. They vaporised his body into nothing, though a few tiny remains survived which would later be collected by the Doctor in his 7th incarnation. It would also later be discovered that his mind had survived as a disembodied spirit, but that is another story.

The Master’s past catches up with him when the Daleks sentence him to death.

The Masters betrayal had proved to be a setback for the Daleks but they still nevertheless managed to recover and continued to fight humanity. They had to face overwhelming opposition with several races joining the side of humanity and Draconia. The Thals also did their bit to help humanity.

The Thals had by this point come to dismiss earth as nothing more than a legend, but after the Thals experience on Spirodon they had come to see that it existed after all.

From their underground base which the Daleks still did not know the location of, the Thals continued to intercept their messages and broadcast them to humanity and the Draconians. Eventually the Daleks however did manage to find the Thals base and they butchered them. They laid waste to their whole underground civilisation and exterminated thousands of them. A few Thals escaped to the surface and sent a distress signal to the humans. Though most of them ignored it, one ship believing they owed the Thals for helping them made a perilous journey to Skaro and managed to save the last few Thals. The Thals were then sent to live on a human colony though they vowed that one day they would return and re claim their home planet.

The Daleks also had to deal with rebellions and attempted rebellions on other planets that they had taken over too.

During the later years of the war the outer and smaller colonies in the earth empire would suffer the most. The main defence concentrating on protecting earth itself the centre of the empire above all else and many smaller outer colonies would be conquered by the Daleks. The Daleks would often conquer these colonies even if there was no strategic value to them simply because they could serve as examples of the Daleks superiority to mankind. The Daleks would brutalise the humans on these colonies and broadcast it to the rest of the universe. Showing the humans on the colonies endure unimaginable torture and suffering at the hands of the Daleks, whilst the main human resistance was unable or in some cases unwilling to waste resources on helping them, this only served to crush several of their allies faith in humanity as well as several humans faith in their own leaders.

It was because of this that the Dalek Bounty Hunters appeared.

Abslom Daak, the most famous of all the Dalek bounty hunters.

The Dalek bounty hunters offered to protect these outer colonies though at the same time many of them only offered to kill Daleks for money. They would often have to slaughter all of the Daleks on a colony which they could only do in teams, though even then they would have to supply Dalek eye stalks as proof.

The Dalek bounty hunters would become seen as heroes helping the planets and colonies that the lesser worlds had left to the Daleks. Despite this however many of them were anything but. Many of them were self serving criminals whose morality was not that much better than the Daleks themselves.

By far and away the most successful Dalek Bounty Hunter however was Abslom Daak, he would become known simply as Dalek killer.

Psi see’s an artists illustration of Abslom Daak among the list of the universe’s greatest criminals.

Daak was a notorious criminal before he became a Dalek bounty hunter. He had been convicted of 23 charges of murder, piracy, pillage, massacre and other crimes too horrible to bring to the public’s attention. He was given a choice of either vaporization or life as a Dalek killer. The earth government by this stage had found a use for the Dalek bounty hunters as not only could they protect the outer worlds but they could also be a good use for the ever growing criminal population of the galaxy which came as a result of the fact that the empire was being fractured by the war.

Daak naturally chose becoming a Dalek fighter. He proved not surprisingly to have a talent from it and on the planet Mazam he managed to single handedly destroy a Dalek task force. Whilst on the planet he met and fell in love with Princess Taiyin. He even managed to convince her to fight back against the Daleks. Prior to this the rulers of the relatively primitive Mazam had placated the Daleks who had taken over their world. Unfortunately this resulted in Taiyin’s extermination. Following this Daak’s crusade against the Daleks became personal. He vowed to exterminate every single Dalek in the entire galaxy.

Daak became famous for his exploits against the Daleks. His weapon of choice was a massive laser chainsaw that could slice through a Dalek casing like tissue paper.

Daak makes no secret of the fact that he enjoys destroying Daleks.

Daak would later form a crew which consisted of a Draconian Prince named Salander, a human named Vol Mercurius and an Ice Warrior named Harma. They travelled the universe together in a ship called the Kill Wagon. Daak also kept the body of his lover Taiyin in suspended animation in the hopes that she could be revived.

He encountered two different incarnations of the Doctor, the 4th Doctor and Sarah Jane briefly and later the 7th Doctor on the planet Hell. The Kill Wagon had crashed here whilst investigating Dalek activity. Daak and the Doctor discovered that the Daleks were mining a gas called helkogen that they intended to use to build a superweapon that could exterminate humanity.

Ultimately Daak sacrificed himself to save both the Doctor and the entire human race by flying a Dalek hovercraft into the heart of their super weapon which destroyed it completely and seemingly killed Daak.

Who killed all the Daleks? Who do you think?

During the later years of the war the Emperor having finally recovered resumed his role as the leader of the Daleks from the Dalek Supreme. He had been placed in a much larger and more powerful casing too.

The Emperors new clothes

During the war the Daleks soon began to investigate the mysterious planet Karn. Karn had once belonged to a powerful and mighty empire that had crumbled many centuries before the Daleks had even been created due to civil wars. Nevertheless the remains of their most powerful super weapon had been left on the planet. The people of Karn since the fall of their empire had gone on to become farmers, but one of the Masters of Karn remained behind. He scattered the super weapon of Karn. It could not be destroyed so he merely scattered it instead across the planet in the form of 7 crystals.

As soon as the Daleks had heard of the weapon however they enslaved the population of the planet which they did with the aid of the native life forms the Clawrantulars.

Fortunately the Doctor would soon be on hand to stop them. This however was not the Docto from our universe. It was in fact an alternate reality version of the Doctor. In this other universe the time lords of that reality had looked into a possible future and had seen that the Daleks from our reality would do something that would threaten every universe.

Apparently the weapon that they hoped to assemble on Karn was more powerful than even they had thought. If used it would create a rip in the vortex itself which would eventually consume every universe. In order to prevent this catastrophe from happening the time lords sent their version of the Doctor through a rip between universes. The Doctor was not even aware of what was happening or that he was arriving in another universe. Upon arriving on Karn the time lords simply told him to retrieve the crystals. In doing so however he was shot by a Dalek which caused him to regenerate into his next incarnation.

Just before he regenerated he managed to make his way to the TARDIS where in his delirium he took the TARDIS to earth. There he landed in the middle of a play. After staggering out of the TARDIS and onto the stage two members of the audience went on stage to help him. Jenny and Jimmy.

The two would help the regenerating Doctor back into the TARDIS where once they entered it was quickly whisked away back to Karn by the Time lords so that this alternate version of the 4th Doctor could complete his mission.

The three of them would soon explore Karn. Encountering members of a resistance movement along the way, though the Doctor was able to retrieve the crystals including one from the last Master of Karn the Daleks were later able to corner him and his companions and demanded that they hand over the crystals.

The Doctor from another universe and his companions Jennie and Jimmy come face to face with a Dalek on Karn

Ultimately however the Doctor was able to defeat the Daleks by causing the ultimate weapon they had placed the crystals in to explode. Though the crystals were not damaged the Daleks entire base was destroyed, and the crystals were buried under tons of rubble.

Having saved every universe and freed Karn from Dalek rule the Doctor took Jennie and Jimmy home, though he would later take them for more adventures before the Time Lords took him back to his own universe, with our Doctor having never been aware that there was another version of him running around.

The Dalek Supreme was forced to self destruct for his failure in the Karn mission by the Emperor and his second in command a black Dalek took his place as the second in command of the new Dalek race. The Gold Dalek the previous second in command had been killed by Daak many years earlier. Dalek X was considered an abomination by the Emperor and was not made the second in command either.

As the years rolled on the Daleks slowly began to lose the war. Despite being more advanced than any of the races they were facing they were simply outnumbered.

In the final years of the war they made one last ditch attempt to try and beat humanity using the Arkheon Threshold.

The Arkheon Threshold was a legendary schism in time in space which if opened could give a life form access to the entire time vortex itself. Even the time lords feared the Arkheon Threshold.

The Daleks had discovered it in the early days of their second empire. They had set up a secret base on the planet and for centuries have tried to find a way to gain control of the Threshold.

They finally discover that they can find it by extracting the planets core. Unfortunately once again their sworn enemy the Doctor would be on hand to stop them.

This incarnation of the Doctor was from a much later point in the Daleks history. It was the 10th Doctor who had accidentally crossed his own time line.

The 10th Doctor encountered his greatest enemies out of sync with his own timeline

The 10th Doctor encountered a group of Dalek bounty hunters piloting the ship called the Wayfarer. Together they travelled to Arkheon as the Doctor suspected that the Daleks wanted to gain access to the threshold. As soon they landed on the planet however they were captured by the Daleks. The Doctor did not know that they had already found the planet. He believed that they were merely searching for it. With all of the bounty hunters captured, the Doctor was taken before Dalek X himself. Dalek X by this point had become the one Dalek that every Dalek bounty hunter dreamed of killing, yet at the same time he was also the one Dalek that they were all afraid of too.

Dalek X proceeded to torture the Doctor for his own enjoyment. He simply wished to see how much pain he could inflict on a timelord and tortured the Doctor for many hours on end. After he finished the torture session Dalek X told the Doctor that after they had extracted the planets core they would find the Threshold using a Chronon collider which he intended to power using the Doctors own TARDIS as a control element.

Though the Doctor refused at first even under torture ultimately Dalek X was able to gain his co-operation by threatening a young woman and her daughter. Once the Daleks had gained access to the Threshold they would control the very time vortex itself and use it to wipe both humanity and the time lords from existence.

Ultimately the Doctor was able to stop them however with the aid of the bounty hunters many of whom gave their lives he was able to causes an explosion on the planet Hurala where the Daleks base was by rigging the silo to explode. Unfortunately as there was no way to override the safety ride someone had to stay behind to do it manually. One of the Bounty hunters named Bowman agreed to do it despite protests from Koral his companion who was in love with him. Fortunately the Doctor using the TARDIS was able to rescue him just before the base exploded  which destroyed the entire Dalek fleet. The Doctor then sealed the threshold and the Daleks base on Archeon was overrun by the earth forces.

Hurala was quarantined off by humanity due to the radiation levels caused by the explosion. Dalek X meanwhile had survived the blast but was badly damaged. The Doctor visited him telling him that the Daleks had lost and that by the time the human quarantine had finished he will be long dead and no one will be able to find him. Dalek X nevertheless assured the Doctor that he will return and that when he does he will find the Doctor. The Doctor simply responded that he would be waiting.

After the loss of Dalek X and the Archeon threshold the Daleks finally surrendered to humanity and the war was over. The Daleks completely withdrew from Earth’s galaxy and retreated across the cosmos. They also abandoned their home planet Skaro.

Skaro had long since lost the ability to travel through space by itself as the motor that did this had broken down.

The Thals wished to return to Skaro but unfortunately for them the planet was once again quarantined by the earth empire.

Though the losses were big for the Daleks it was not a total defeat as they still had many planets and even whole solar systems under their control. Gradually over the years they would begin to build up their empire again in systems long beyond earth’s reach.

They were cautious about launching another attack on the earth however. Even though earth had been weakened it still had so many allies and the Daleks did not wish to waste more resources on them until the time was right to strike.

An opportunity soon presented itself when a new form of space plague began to spread throughout humanities colonies. The Daleks were completely immune to this plague, whilst humanity struggled to find a cure.

Eventually mankind discovered that a substance known as parinnium could cure the Plague, but unfortunately it was so rare it was practically non existent on every planet in the known galaxy except for Exxilon. Exxilon had been a planet that people had been terrified to venture too since mankind had first journeyed out to the stars. According to the old legends no one ever returned from this mysterious unknown planet.

Nevertheless an earth expedition would soon be sent there to retrieve the parrinium which earth satellites had discovered was on the planet from space.

Upon landing on the planet the earth expedition was soon drained of all power and they were attacked by savage, hooded creatures. The Daleks meanwhile having found out that the humans had wanted the parrinium landed on Exxilon too. They wished to steal the Parrinium and then launch a plague missile on the planet that would destroy all life on it and prevent mankind from ever landing there again. The Daleks would then use the parrinium the only known cure to the plague that was threatening to kill billions of people across the entire galaxy to hold the earth empire to ransom and force it to surrender.

As soon as the Daleks landed they found themselves affected by the same power drain that had stranded the earth ship. Not only was their ship similarly stranded, but their weaponry was totally drained.

Thus completely helpless the Daleks were forced to work alongside the humans and also the Doctor who had also landed on the planet by accident and whose TARDIS had similarly been affected by the power drain.

On the planet Exxilon the Doctor is forced to work alongside his greatest enemies.

Eventually the Daleks were able to overcome the power drain by replacing their dead laser weaponry with machine guns These machine guns allowed them to slaughter the native life forms the Exxillons on mass and enslave both them and the humans forcing them both to mine for parrinium and bring it on board their ship. The Doctor and his companion Sarah Jane Smith meanwhile met up with a friendly group of Exxilons led by an Exxilon called Bellal. Bellal explained to them that the Exxillons had once been an advanced race but their time came when they built a city that was alive. The city turned on them and very nearly wiped them out. They split into two factions. One who worshipped the city as a God, the savages and the others, Bellal’s group who sought to destroy it and free their planet.

Bellal also told them that the City was the source of the power drain The Doctor and Bellal ventured through the city braving all of its traps and hazards (including two zombies that the city created to attack them), and managed to disrupt its brain causing the whole city to melt. The Daleks had also destroyed the beacon too and thus the power was restored. Now at full power the Daleks revealed their true plans and took off preparing to launch their plague missiles at the planet. Fortunately however a member of the earth expedition stowed away on board their space ship and activated one of their own bombs destroying the ship before it could fire its missiles.

Sarah Jane revealed to the Doctor that she had already stowed the parrinium on board the earth ship anyway.

Mankind was able to cure the plague and the Daleks having lost their tactical advantage once again retreated across the stars.

Return of Davros and the Movellan War

“This moment is unique in the history of the universe. Davros lives!”

As the Daleks kept expanding into deeper space the monsters soon came into contact with an enemy who could match them. The Movellans.

The Movellans were a race of ruthless machine creatures every bit as bad as the Daleks. They sought to conquer the galaxy too. Being just as advanced as the Daleks when the two races faced one another they were so perfectly matched they were literally unable to harm one another.

Due to the fact that both races relied solely on logic every time one battle computer tried to launch an attack the other’s would logically find a way to block it. Thus centuries passed without a shot being fired. As the Doctor put the Daleks and the Movellans two of the most vicious and ruthless races in the universe had found the solution for eternal peace.

What happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object. The Daleks and the Movellans where locked in a stalemate for centuries.

The Daleks soon sought help from the most unlikely of sources their creator Davros.

Davros had in fact survived his extermination from centuries ago. The Emperor had in fact been aware of this for many years. Having kept the old records from the Kaled bunker on Davros’s life support machine the emperor was aware that it had merely placed him into a state of suspended animation and that he could be revived at any point. He had kept this knowledge secret as he believed that the Daleks may have use for their creator at some point. Now was the time. The Emperor hoped that Davros could perhaps break the stale mate for the Daleks as he did not rely on logic or that he could perhaps re condition the Daleks so as not to be so dependent on logic.

The Daleks quickly headed for Skaro. A Dalek task force was able to make its way past the human quarantine and land on the surface of the planet with several humanoid slaves.

They begin to dig to where the remains of the old Kaled bunker had been. Unfortunately for the Daleks not only had a team of Movellans anded on Skaro, but once again their archenemy the Doctor arrived at this vital moment for them.

This was the 4th Doctor alongside Romana a time lady. Together they were able with the aid of some Movellans and an escaped Dalek prisoner to find Davros first before the Daleks by making their way down a massive shaft the Daleks had dug.

Davros came to life as the Doctor entered the room. With his life support machine having finished regenerating his organs and now he was ready to live again. The Doctor tried to get Davros away from the Daleks, but the Daleks began killing their own prisoners forcing the Doctor to hand Davros over to them, though the Doctor was able to negotiate the release of their prisoners.

The Doctor discovered what the Movellans really were and how they had planned to destroy Skaro in order to prevent the Daleks from gaining the advantage. They also hoped to capture the Doctor and use him to help them break the stalemate with the Daleks as well.

The Doctor however was able to beat the Movellans by using the freed Dalek slaves to attack them. Though a highly advanced race the Movellans were easy to beat in hand to hand combat and thus the humans in a one on one fight overpowered them relatively easily. Davros meanwhile growing paranoid about the Movellan ship sent a squad of Daleks  to blow themselves up when they reached the ship. The Doctor however made his way to where Davros’s base was where after killing the Dalek that guarded him he forced Davros to activate the bombs before the Daleks reached the ship destroying them.

The humans subsequently left for the earth empire in the Movellan ship with Davros as their prisoner.

Davros was put on trial by the earth empire for his crimes against all of sentient life for creating the Daleks. He was eventually found guilty and frozen.

The Daleks meanwhile would continue their war with the Movellans for another 90 years. Eventually the Movellans where ironically able to work out a logical solution to the problem by creating a virus that attacked the Dalek mutants. The entire Dalek fleet was wiped out in an instant by the plague and their empire crumbled virtually over night.

The second Dalek empire had come to an even more dismal ending than the first and the Daleks were forced to flee from the Movellans altogether in order to avoid being driven to extinction.

The last few Daleks left alive led by the Emperor and the Supreme Dalek soon regrouped and tried to find a way to survive and recover from their humiliating defeat.

In the next chapter we will look at how they came back stronger than ever as well as the power struggle between the Emperor and Davros.

The History of the Daleks Part 1: The Creation of the Daleks and The Days of the First Empire

This series will be about the history of the Daleks within the fictional Doctor Who universe itself. My motto is that EVERYTHING IS CANON! I will try and include all Dalek stories even if they are contradictory to one another. For instance I will try and fit all 4 origins of the Daleks together rather than simply pick one. Obviously I will have to fill in a few gaps a long the way but pretty much everything that you read here comes from a licensed Doctor Who story and not just from the television series. This history will take all forms of spin off material into account from the Big Finish Audio’s to comic books to stage shows. Remember EVERYTHING IS CANON!

The Daleks are the most evil, dangerous and feared creatures in all of creation. Originally from the planet Skaro, the monsters cut a bloody swath through several galaxies across millions of years, destroying entire civilisations and wiping out whole species.

Gathered here for the first time are the full Dalek Chronicles. The Dalek Chronicles are small glass cubes with pieces of micro film inside them that contain information about the history of the Daleks (as well as our own future).

It is not known who sent them. David Whitaker suggested in his extensive study that they may have come from a Dalek museum that exploded in the future. Russell T Davies meanwhile believes that they may have been sent intentionally from the year 5 billion.

Whatever the case the first ever Dalek Chronicles cube was discovered by the late great Terry Nation in his own garden in the year 1963.

Nation managed to translate the information that was contained within this small cube with the help of his friend David Whitaker.

Other Dalek chronicles would later be discovered and translated by a number of other prominent experts on alien life over the years, including Ben Aaronovitch who managed to translate the cube that told of the destruction of Skaro. Russell T Davies also discovered the cube that told of the time war, which helped to explain the circumstances surrounding the Dalek Invasion of Earth in the year 2009.

Prior to this invasion many people did not believe the information contained within the Dalek Chronicles to be real, and indeed the study of them was a very obscure, fringe area of research.

After the Dalek Invasion however searches for more cubes became widespread across the entire world.

The most recent Dalek chronicles were discovered and translated by Steven Moffat who helped to shed more light on the time war including for the first time how it actually ended.

It is not known what effect our knowledge of this information will have on our future. It might change it, or perhaps knowing this information and trying to change it will ultimately end up creating the very future we hope to avoid. Whatever the case at the very least this knowledge will hopefully alert any of you reading to the danger of the Daleks.

Ever since they first came from the sky on that fateful night when the earth was transported half way across the universe, mankind has been desperate to know the truth about these mysterious and cruel invaders. Now for the first time thanks to the tireless work of some of the most renowned experts on alien life and time travel theories such as Terry Nation, David Whitaker, Russell T Davies and Steven Moffat their full history can be compiled here.

In The Beginning: The Planet Skaro

The Daleks originated on the planet Skaro. Not much information has been given on the early history of Skaro before its two dominant humanoid races, the Kaleds and the Thals evolved.

It is known that it was the twelfth planet from its sun in its solar system. It also had a similar atmosphere, climate and gravity to that of the planet earth.

Life also developed in a similar fashion on Skaro too. Gigantic Dinosaurs evolved on the planet as did humanoid life forms. Unlike on earth however the humanoids where shown to emerge at the same time as the Dinosaurs.

An example of the Dinosaurian life forms on Skaro

At some point the single humanoid race split off into four separate species. The Dals, The Kaleds, the Thals and the Tharon’s.

The Dals were said to be teachers and philosophers, whilst both the Thals and the Kaleds appear to have been warriors. Almost next to nothing is known about the Tharon’s.

Both the Dals and the Tharons were driven to extinction by the Kaleds. Though a few pieces of Dal culture would survive and become integrated by the Kaleds.

The Kaleds would later become locked in a war with the Thals. It is not known what caused this war, but considering the fact that by the time it started the Kaleds had already exterminated two entire species on Skaro, it seems likely that they were the instigators.

At the same time however it is known that the Thal culture was also brutal too and thus it is possible that they may have been the aggressors. Perhaps the Thals grew scared after seeing what the Kaleds did to the Tharons and the Dals and declared war on them first for their own survival.

Whatever the case both races waged an all out war against one another that lasted for over 1000 years. During the course of this war atomic and nuclear weapons would be deployed by both sides against each other which slowly but surely destroyed the surface of the planet. Turning it from a beautiful green paradise into a barren, dead wasteland.

The Kaleds and the Thals developed all kinds of devastating weapons to use against one another such as the “Hand Mines”.

The nuclear weapons eventually polluted the air of Skaro itself and caused both the Kaled’s and the Thals to slowly mutate. These mutations who were christened “Muto’s”, where banished to the wastelands of Skaro where they mostly perished, though some of them managed to survive and became savage creatures. Killing anyone who dared to venture into the wastelands. The limited resources also meant that many Kaled and Thal soldiers had to resort to using more primitive weaponry too.

Near the end of the war emerged an important figure who would not only change the face of Skaro but of the very universe itself forever. Davros.

Davros was the son of Lady Calcula and Councillor Quested. The two had been having an affair which ultimately resulted in his birth. He also had an elder sister Yarvell.

At some point during his childhood Davros became lost in a Handmine field. With the previous Kaled soldier who tried to save him being killed, Davros was soon approached by an older looking man with silver hair, who threw a sonic device to him that allowed them to communicate. At first the man tried to give him advice that would help him, but later after Davros told him his name, the mysterious stranger left with a look of horror on his face.

Little did Davros know the man was in fact his future archenemy. The renegade time lord known as the Doctor. Ultimately the Doctor would return brandishing a weapon. He told Davros that he was going to save his friend the only way he could and shouted “Exterminate” before blasting the hand mines with the weapon saving Davros. The Doctor then told Davros that he had shown him mercy and took him by the hand, helping him to get home.

YoungDavros

Davros as a boy comes face to face with his saviour and future archenemy the Doctor.

Davros was discouraged from his interest in science by his step father Colonel Nasgard who wanted him to become a soldier. Nasgard mistakenly believed himself to be Davros’s biological father.

Davros would later join Military Corps but he was very quickly put in charge of developing new weapons. He came to believe in sharp contrast to his sister who was a peace activist that the Kaleds must completely and utterly exterminate the entire Thal race forever.

Later after the death of his entire family except for his mother, Davros was able to join the Scientific Corps.

Some time after his mother died, Davros was horifficly disfigured in a Thal bombardment on the Kaled dome.

DAvros Burnt2

Davros is crippled for life by the Thals

After the explosion, Davros was left without his left arm his legs, entire lower body, and even his taste buds. His eyes were also so badly damaged that he could barely open them.

Davros was placed in a special life support machine which kept his body in a kind of stasis. This prevented his body from breaking down and ironically prolonged his life by many years. His life support machine also meant that he no longer needed any nourishment either.

An eyestalk bulb was also placed on his forehead which allowed him to see through this third eye.

Davros after his accident

Davros would later assassinate the members of the Council of Twelve, the Kaled head’s of state. Following their demise, Davros became the most senior citizen within the Kaled Dome and thus began to wield considerable power.

He would later be made the head of the Kaled Scientific elite itself alongside his associate the ruthless and sadistic Nyder.

Davros soon discovered through his experiments that the Kaled people where destined to continue to mutate. As the air of Skaro itself had become polluted there was no way to reverse the mutation process. Thus more and more mutations would continue to be born over the generations, until eventually the entire species itself would be nothing but mutants, and they would continue to mutate until they eventually reached a final mutated form.

Davros wanted to find out what the final result of the Kaled mutation cycle would be, and ensure a way for it to survive. He took living Kaled cells and subjected them to large amounts of radiation that was present in the air of Skaro causing them to mutate. Many of these creatures Davros created where banished to the waste lands after he was done with them just like the muto’s. Whilst most of them died others did manage to survive, but most of them degenerated to the level of savage animals.

Davros eventually discovered what it was the Kaleds were destined to mutate into. Slimy, amorphous, Octopus like blob creatures.

Realizing these Kaled mutants could not survive on their own Davros soon began to develop war machines that could house them. At the same time he also began to experiment on their minds. Davros removed all emotions from these mutants brains that he believed were weaknesses in the Kaled race. Emotions such as love, pity and compassion. He also programmed into their minds a strong hatred of all other life forms that were different to them. Davros did this as he believed that in order to survive the Kaled mutants would need to be aggressive to all other life forms. He felt that one race must dominate all the others. In his own twisted way Davros believed that only then could you have peace as the one superior race who ruled, would do so benevolently.

In truth however deep down Davros who had been driven insane by the accident that scarred him, really just longed for power and even revenge against the universe itself for what had happened to him. He hoped that his new creations, whom he considered superior to his own race the Kaleds, would allow him to achieve this.

The Kaleds did not believe that life existed on other worlds. Despite this however Davros though dismissing it in the public eye considered it a possibility.

He had never found out just who the man who had saved him as a child was and how he had suddenly managed to appear out of nowhere and then vanish once again. He also had analysed the mysterious sonic device that the stranger had left with him, and found it to be in advance of anything that the Kaled people had developed. Over the years he came to believe that this man was in fact an alien from another world.

Thus he programmed into the Kaled mutant’s the possibility of there being life on other planets, and that if they did exist then they would have to conquer them to in order to protect their own race from any threats to it.

Davros essentially removed all emotions from these Kaled’s brains except for hatred. Davros came to name his creation, the Kaled Mutant in the robot shell, a Dalek.

The word Dalek actually came from the language of the extinct Dals. Davros had managed to obtain a copy of The Book of Predictions which had been written by the Dals.

It contained a prophecy that stated that ordinary men would one day become gods, with Dalek being the Dal word for god.

The Creation of Davros’ Daleks

“And on that day men will become as Gods” The first Daleks created by Davros.

As Davros carried on with his experiments. Out in the wastelands of Skaro appeared a man who would stop at nothing to prevent the evil he was creating from being unleashed upon the universe. The Doctor.

This version of the Doctor was a much earlier incarnation than the one who had rescued Davros as a boy. This was the Fourth Doctor who had been sent to Skaro by his own people, the time lords.

The time lords had foreseen a version of the future where the Daleks had destroyed all other life forms in the universe. In order to avoid this the time lords decided to send the Doctor back in time to tamper with Dalek history by altering their development, slowing it down or even if need be wiping the Daleks from history.

The Doctor and his two human companions Harry and Sarah were given a time ring which would allow them to be reunited with the TARDIS, though only once their mission was completed.

The three of them where soon separated with Sarah being kidnapped by the Thals and the Doctor and Harry ending up in the Kaled dome.

By this point only one Kaled and Thal city survived. All the others had been destroyed. With these two cities also now being all that was left of either the Thal or the Kaled races in general.

The Thals where preparing a final strike against the Kaled people. They had created a rocket that they believed would be powerful enough to destroy the entire Kaled race.

Little did they really know that it would not be able to barely scratch the surface of giant dome that covered the Kaled city.

The Doctor meanwhile managed to make his way into the Kaled bunker. After almost becoming the first victim of a Dalek when Davros tried to use him as target practice, the Doctor with the aid of a Kaled scientist named Ronson, was able to collect evidence of Davros’s experiments which he presented to the Kaled government.

Despite his influence the Kaled government could still override Davros if they wished too and after what the Doctor showed them they intended to shut down his experiments. Unfortunately for them Davros would subsequently betray the Kaleds.

He gave the Thals the secrets they needed to penetrate the Kaled dome which would allow their rocket to destroy their city.

The Thals believed Davros’ lies that he simply wanted to bring an end to the war on their planet as they were in Davros’s own words “hungry for victory“.

The Thals launched their rocket despite the Doctors attempts to stop them. With the Kaled city gone all that remained of the Kaled people was Davros himself and the scientists in his bunker.

Davros subsequently claimed Ronson was the traitor and had him gunned down by the Daleks.

Davros then declared “Today the Kaled race is gone consumed in the fire’s of war, but from its ashes shall rise a new race the supreme creature the ultimate conquerer of the universe THE DALEKS”

Davros sent a few Daleks to the Thal city. The Thals where celebrating finally triumphing over their enemies and caught completely off guard, though even without the element of surprise the Daleks were still too powerful for them.

The Daleks began to slaughter their way through the Thals without mercy gunning down thousands of them and levelling their entire city.

A few of the Thals managed to escape and the Doctor told them that they would need to attack Davros’ bunker in order to defeat the Daleks. The Doctor would later be captured however by Davros alongside his two companions.

Davros had discovered that the Doctor had not only been an alien but a time traveller after reading Ronson’s interrogation and examination of him. Though the Doctor tried to warn Davros of the suffering the Daleks would cause. Davros did not care and instead was only interested in learning of the times the Daleks lost and demanding to know the reasons for it. Davros proceeded to torture both Sarah and Harry in order to force the Doctor to tell him the reason for every Dalek defeat.

Though the Doctor was forced to comply he later managed to destroy the tape Davros had made. The Doctor soon formed an alliance with several of Davros’ own Kaled scientists who like Ronson had become horrified at what he was creating.

At one point the Doctor had the option of actually destroying the Daleks but he ultimately gave it up. He wondered if morally he had the right to exterminate an entire species at birth, and also that if perhaps some things might even be better with the Daleks as they in the future would unite many races due to their mutual fear and hatred of the Daleks.

Ultimately whilst the Doctor did not destroy the Daleks he still managed to prevent the Time Lord’s vision of the future from coming to pass by not only destroying much of Davros’s work, but also with the aid of the Thals trapping the Daleks in the Kaled bunker by causing an explosion which buried it under thousands of tons of rubble.

The Doctor estimated that it would take them thousands of years to escape which would give other species enough time to catch up with them, and stop them before they could reach the point where they could wipe out all other life forms.

All of the Kaled scientists that had turned on Davros had been subsequently exterminated by the Daleks. With Davros and the Kaleds who had remained loyal to him having been trapped in the bunker with the Daleks. The Daleks then subsequently turned on their creator.

They proceeded to exterminate Davros. Davros ironically just before his apparent death begged them to show pity to all of the men who had remained loyal to him, including his right hand man Nyder.

After exterminating Davros the Dalek who had assumed leadership of the rest declared.

“We are entombed but we live on. This is only the beginning. We will prepare, we will grow stronger. When the time is right we will emerge and take our rightful place as the supreme power of the universe!!!!”

The Daleks immediately tried to make good on that promise and began trying to find a way to escape from their prison. Davros and the other Kaled’s bodies meanwhile they merely stuffed into an old locker.

Little did the Daleks know that Davros was not completely dead. His life support machine the very thing that had kept him alive for years placed him in a state of suspended animation, whilst it slowly began to repair many of his organs that had been damaged by the Dalek’s death rays.

The Thal’s meanwhile with their city destroyed by the Daleks soon left the area to make a new start whilst the Doctor, Sarah and Harry left Skaro using the time ring.

As they vanished through time and space itself Sarah commented that their mission had been a failure, but the Doctor feeling content stated

“Although I know that the Daleks will create havoc and destruction for millions of years I also know that out of their evil must come something good.”

The Creation of Zolfian and Yarvelling’s Daleks

Zolfian with his creations.

The surviving Thals would flee to Skaro’s second continent. They found this continent less irradiated than the one they and the Kaled’s had lived on for centuries, and they were actually able to grow food there.

Meanwhile little did the Thal’s know some of Davros’s early experiments had survived. The mutants he had cast out, whilst most of them had perished and most of the few who had survived had degenerated in animals. A few were still nevertheless able to retain their intelligence.

These Kaleds were not quite as mutated as the Daleks. Their shape was still humanoid, but they were horrible, squat, blue skinned, goblin like creatures.

The blue skinned humanoid Daleks. They were early experiments of Davros, not quite as far down the Kaled Mutation cycle as his finished Daleks trapped in the bunker.

These Kaled mutants remembering who had created them soon made their way back to Davros’s bunker. Most of the bunker was gone, but there was still a few upper sections left unburied.

There the Kaled mutants found notes from Davros about the Kaled mutation cycle and the Daleks as well as even notes about the battle armour he intended to house them in.

They declared themselves Daleks after what they read in Davros’s old notes. The creatures whilst sentient had no idea what they were before discovering Davros’s papers.

These blue skinned humanoid Daleks soon set about rebuilding the old Kaled city that had been destroyed by the Thals.

Within a couple of decades the humanoid Daleks had completely rebuilt the old Kaled city. Led by a man named Zolfian, the Daleks still sought to exterminate the Thals.

They had come to worship Davros almost as a messianic figure. Thus they adopted his xenophobic beliefs as their own. They were not conditioned to believe that all other life forms were inferior like Davros’ Daleks as he had not begun to experiment on their minds when he discarded them. Instead they simply adopted it as their main belief.

With the Thals now living on another continent the Daleks began launching missiles at the Thal city. The Thals meanwhile had forsaken their old war like ways due to their previous conflict. They had also found a way to prevent themselves from continuing to mutate too.

The Thals offered the Daleks a chance for peace, but the Daleks flat out refused and thus in order to protect themselves the Thals were drawn into yet another war.

Both races began to launch missiles at one another from their continents, though very few if any wherever able to actually hit their targets. Due to the lack of resources it was hard to develop effective weaponry.

Eventually the head of the scientific elite Yarvelling soon began to construct a robotic war machine based on Davros’s old design for the Dalek casings. Unfortunately Yarvelling was nowhere near as great a scientific mind as Davros. His Dalek casing was not only not as powerful but also had trouble moving on non metallic surfaces without breaking down. Yarvelling couldn’t find a way for these casings to power themselves like Davros had done.

Yarvelling reveals his new War Machines based on Davros’s old design to Zolfian.

Zolfian meanwhile had planned to use a new form of neutron bomb that he believed would have been capable of destroying the entire continent that the Thals lived on. Zolfian wished to pollute the whole continent to ensure that no thals could live there afterwards. All of the Dalek resources were being pulled into this doomsday weapon.

Despite this however Yarvelling continued to work on his war machines hoping that it could be used to eradicate any Thals who may have survived Zolfian’s weapon.

Yarvelling did not have much faith in Zolfian’s weapon. He believed that it was unstable and actually could threaten all of Skaro itself. Unfortunately Zolfian eager to see the destruction of the Thals once and for all refused to listen to Yarvelling.

Later a storm would strike the Dalek city and set the bomb off. The bomb not only consumed the city of the Daleks, but virtually all of Skaro itself.

The bomb was far more dangerous than even Yarvelling had predicted and it managed to bring about the final destruction of the planet Skaro.

Most of the Thals were exterminated in the blast, whilst the few who survived were horribly mutated. They would work hard to create a drug that could allow them to survive the irradiated air of Skaro and even reverse the effects. After Zolfian’s bomb the air had now become completely toxic to the point where without the new anti radiation drugs, the Thals could not survive for more than a few days before dying of radiation poisoning.

As for the Daleks both Zolfian and Yarvelling had managed to survive the blast by finding shelter in an underground bunker which also protected them from the irradiated air. Eventually after over a year underground the two men decided to venture to the surface in order to see if there were any other Dalek survivors.

They were soon confronted by a surviving Dalek who was now housing himself in one of Yarvelling’s war machine’s based on Davros’ old design for a Dalek casing.

The Dalek explained that most of their kind had been killed in the blast but a few unlucky survivors had become horribly mutated. These Daleks had been pushed further down their mutation cycle by Zolfian’s bomb, though still not quite to the point that Davros had accelerated the earlier Daleks too.

The mutant Daleks had come to house themselves in Yarvelling’s war machine’s believing that it was the only thing that could protect them from the poison air.

The mutant Dalek asked Zolfian and Yarvelling to construct more Dalek casings to house its mutated kin.

The two men agreed for the good of their race. Unfortunately though they were able to construct more casings they soon perished from the polluted air on Skaro. Unlike the Thal scientists they had not bothered to try and find a way to survive the polluted air of Skaro. The focused all of their efforts on creating casings for the other Daleks.

The first Dalek who approached Zolfian and Yarvelling had declared itself the Emperor of the Daleks and had been placed in a larger golden casing as a result.

The First Emperor of the Daleks

The Daleks were able to survive in their metal casings, but unfortunately many of the casings began to break down and in order to find a way to power them permanently, the emperor was forced to draw static electricity from the metal floors of the Dalek city This meant that the Daleks could not leave their city however as if they did then the machines would lose power and the creatures would die.

Thus the Dalek race was seemingly confined to their city, though they were still able to live there as it had everything they needed to survive in their including machines that could produce artificial non irradiated food.

The Daleks would remain trapped in their city for many centuries until they would encounter their two greatest enemies once more, the Thals and the Doctor.

Masters of Skaro

The Thals would later travel to the continent the Daleks where living on. Their own continent had been drained of the few resources it had left after Zolfian’s bomb and was virtually dead. Hoping that there might be some life on the other continent the Thals also hoped that there might be some Dalek survivors and that they could work with them to rebuild their planet.

By this point the Thals had become complete pacifists. Despite the fact that it was the Daleks who had launched the neutron bob that had devastated Skaro the Thals still blamed themselves for the conflict. They decided to never under any circumstances fight in a war again and hoped that they could reason with the Daleks should any of them have survived.

Having long since left their city the Thals took with them samples of their drug, food supplies and some historical records, most of which had become lost.

The Thals had virtually no documents about the Kaleds, though they had some records of the Dals.

The last group of Thals soon stumbled upon the Dalek city. Unsure of whether or not to explore it little did they know they were soon spotted by the Daleks camera’s at the edge of their city.

The Daleks were absolutely horrified to see that some of their enemies had survived after believing that they had exterminated them 500 years ago.

Realizing that if the Thals had survived then they must have had something that could allow them to survive outside in the poison air. The Daleks wanted whatever it was the Thals had in order to survive outside of their casings.

Meanwhile in the petrified jungle of Skaro the Daleks greatest enemy, the Doctor arrived. Though this was not the first time he had arrived on Skaro, technically it would be from his point of view the first time he ever encountered the Daleks and as a result things would never be the same for the renegade time lord again.

The Doctor in his first incarnation was desperate to explore this strange, seemingly dead planet despite his companions misgivings. He later tricked them into exploring the Dalek city that he had seen in the distance by claiming that a piece of his TARDIS was damaged and the only way he could repair it would be too explore the city where there might be the necessary equipment to fix it.

This decision would ultimately be the worst the Doctor would make in any of his many lives.

The Thals had spotted the Doctor and his companions when they were exploring the dead forest. Their leader Aloydn attempted to contact Susan the Doctor’s grand daughter, but as it was dark and she couldn’t see him properly she paniced and fled befored he could speak to her.

Later just before the Doctor and co left for the city Aloydn left a box that contained the anti radiation drugs outside of the TARDIS. The Doctor unsure of what it was simply placed it in the TARDIS to examine later and headed off for the city with his companions.

Whilst there Barbara became separated from the others and was kidnapped by a Dalek.

Barbara comes face to face with one of Skaro’s nastiest.

The Doctor, Ian and Susan meanwhile would discover a giga counter upstairs that revealed to them that the air of the planet was polluted. Realising that they had all contracted radiation poisoning due to their long exposure to it, the Doctor revealed his bluff to a furious Ian. Before the travellers could even begin to search for Barbara they were captured by a patrol of Daleks.

Ian in his attempt to escape was shot by a Dalek that merely paralysed his legs as the creatures wanted to keep him and the others alive for questioning.

With all 3 of them being placed in a cell alongside Barbara the Daleks would later interrogate the Doctor on his own.

They initially believed him to be a Thal but the Doctor soon convinced them that he was a visitor from another world. During his conversation with his Dalek captors the Doctor came to realise that the box left outside the TARDIS was in fact a sample of the Thals anti radiation drugs.

He made a deal with the Daleks that one of them would leave the city to retrieve the drugs which they would then split. Though the Daleks agreed to this they ultimately had no intentions of allowing the Doctor and his companions to keep any of the drugs.

Susan being the youngest was the least affected by the radiation sickness and therefore she was sent out to retrieve the drugs from the TARDIS.

On the way back she encountered Alodyn who explained to her the history of his planet. He told her that his people wished to make peace with the Daleks and rebuild Skaro. Nevertheless he didn’t entirely trust them and so he gave Susan a second supply of drugs.

As soon as Susan arrived back in the city the Daleks discovered the second supply. They allowed her and her friends to use them simply because they felt that they could use them in their plans. The Daleks heard from Susan that the Thals wished to make peace with them and so they decided to use her to lure their old enemies into a trap.

They got Susan to write a note which they then left on the gates of their city which said that the Thals where to come to their city the next day and collect food and water from them and that together they could then rebuild all of Skaro.

That Thals desperate for peace believed them and came to the city the next day, unaware that the Daleks intended to exterminate them.

The Doctor and his companions meanwhile managed to overpower the Dalek that was guarding them by figuring out their weakness that they needed to pick up power through the floors. They managed to defeat it by dragging it across a cloak that Alodyn had given to Susan which separated it from the floors.

Ian later managed to warn the Thals just as they walked in the Dalek’s ambush. Unfortunately he was too late to save the Thal’s leader who was gunned down in cold blood by the Daleks.

The rest of the Thals meanwhile managed to escape back into the jungle. Ian attempted to convince them to fight the Daleks but the Thals who had forsaken violence refused and instead planned to simply move back to the plateau they had stayed in briefly before moving down to the Dalek city.

Ultimately however the Doctor and his companions where able to convince the Thals to fight back, though this was not just out of pure altruism. The Doctor needed the Thals help to get back the piece of TARDIS that he ironically had pretended had been damaged in order to explore the city in the first place. The Daleks had stolen it from him whilst they held him prisoner.

The Doctor his companions and the Thals split up into two separate groups. The first one was led by Ian and Barbara which attacked the Dalek city from the back. The back of the city had the perfect natural defence. It was surrounded by a large lake filled with mutations. One Thal was killed was passing by it, but Ian and Barbara’s team where nevertheless able to make their way up the mountain and through a treacherous cave system into the city, though another Thal fell to his death in the process.

The second team led by the Doctor attempted to attack the Daleks from the front, but the Doctor and Susan were captured in the process. In the Daleks custody Susan and the Doctor discovered that the monsters were planning to flood Skaro with radiation that would permanently pollute the air of the planet to the point where not even the Thals would be able to survive with their anti radiation drugs.

The Daleks were doing this not just to destroy the Thals but also to survive too. They had tested the Thal’s anti radiation drugs on themselves and discovered that it was like poison to them. Ironically over the years the Daleks had mutated to the point where they had become dependent on radiation and in order to survive outside of their casings they needed to pollute the air with more radiation.

The Doctor pleaded with them to try and find a way to co exist with the Thals but the Daleks stated that the only interest they had in the Thals was their extermination. The Doctor even offered them the secrets of the TARDIS at one point in exchange for the Thals lives, but the Daleks still prepared to flood the planet with the radiation.

Fortunately Ian and Barbara’s group of Thals having made their way into the city attacked the Daleks. Though the Daleks had the upper hand in the fight, Ian and Barbara’s group managed to distract them long enough for the rest of the Thals led by Alodyn to attack the front of the city. The Daleks were overwhelmed having not expected the Thals to strike back, and the Thals managed to knock out their main power source, whilst the Doctor prevented their reactor from unleashing the radiation on the planet..

All of the Daleks began to lose power to their machines one by one. The last Dalek to lose power begged the Doctor to help, but the Doctor stated coldly that he didn’t know how.

The Daleks were seemingly dead. Though the Thals wished there had been another way, the Doctor told them that they had had no choice and left them to rebuild their world. During his time with the Thals the Doctor had looked at their few surviving historical record. Seeing portraits of the Dals, the Doctor incorrectly believed that the Dals were the forebears of the Daleks. The name Dalek did in fact come from the Dal language, but ultimately the Dals in actual fact had nothing to do with the Daleks as the Doctor would later discover when he visited their past and saw their true ancestors the Kaleds.

The Thals meanwhile began to utilise some of the Dalek technology in order to produce artificial food. They moved into the city and placed the Dalek casings to the bottom layer of the city. Little did they know the Daleks were not dead after all.

They had been merely placed into a state of suspended animation. Once again the creatures had been wrong about their own nature. They had mutated to the point where they weren’t even sure what they actually were any more.

They could survive outside of their casings, albeit not for long without going into a comatose state.

The Emperor of the Daleks meanwhile deep below in the bottom layer of the city of Skaro had not been affected by the power drain. He had a special back up source that would allow him to exist long past the others. The Emperor’s compartment had been sealed off from everyone else. The Emperor had done this for extra protection just in case the city had ever been breached. From the very beginning he had taken into account the fact that there might have been more Thals alive on Skaro. Neither the Thals or the Doctor had been aware of the Emperor’s existence and thus whilst the Thals where moving into the city and using its technology and resources little did they know the Emperor of the Daleks was scheming against them.

The Emperor was able to monitor the Thals from his secret base and waited for the right moment to strike. Late one night when the Thals were sleeping the Emperor managed to sneak his way through the city and reconnect the city’s main power source to all of the Daleks below. These Daleks then emerged and began to slaughter the Thals in their sleep. They killed the most of them, but managed to keep a few others alive.

Despite their earlier wish to exterminate them the Emperor now believed that they needed the Thals help to survive.

Their main power source had been damaged by the Thals and indeed if they were to try and flood the planet with more radiation then they would completely drain their power source.

Thus the Emperor instead decided to spare some of the Thals in order to use them as slave labour to try and find a way to improve their casings so that they could survive outside of the city. With the Thals as a labour force the Daleks were able to make some improvements on their design like never before, as they had never had the slave labour to use before.

The Emperor was able to invent a new device that could be fitted to the Dalek’s backs that could allow them to move outside as it allowed them to pick up power from the city. However even with this the creatures could still only move on flat ground. They needed hover devices that could allow them to fly over rough terrain.

A few of the Thals managed to escape from the Dalek city, though most of them were hunted down by the Daleks, a few managed to evade them and were eventually able to build a new base underground away from the Daleks.

The Daleks meanwhile were able to construct transolar discs that could allow them to fly high above the ground.

The biggest flaw in the Dalek design is fixed.

With all of the problems in their casings fixed the Emperor decided not to flood Skaro with radiation as he believed that they were stronger in this form. If they were to leave their casings they would be weak, amorphous blob like creatures that would be vulnerable to their enemies. In their casings they were strong, powerful and able to defend themselves easily.

The surviving Thals that they had prisoner were all exterminated. The Daleks still needed slave labour but they felt that the Thals were too dangerous as they knew the Daleks inner most secrets. The Emperor unaware that a few Thals had managed to escape underground believed that the entire Thal race had at last been exterminated.

Just as the Thals had underestimated the Daleks then the Daleks had now underestimated the Thals. The Thals would wait underground. They were not, not striking out against the Daleks out of pacifism, but simply because they knew that they were in no position to threaten them. Thus they bided their time waiting for the right moment to fight back against the Daleks.

For now at least the Daleks were finally the masters of Skaro. With a new army to command the Emperor made preparations to begin the Dalek war against the rest of the universe hoping to enslave other life forms and use them to help them construct their casings just like they had done to the Thals.

The Beginning of The Empire

The Daleks are ready to take on the universe.

Skaro would be visited by a race of aliens called the Krattorians. The Krattorians were a race of slave traders and they arrived on the planet with a group of slave workers.

The Daleks eager to capture the secret of space travel from them concealed their city underneath the sand by magnetizing the sand which pulled it over the city creating a dune.

Two of the slaves named Astolith and Sala planned to overthrow the Krattorians. Unfortunately the two were betrayed by Sala’s uncle Andor.

Whilst Astolith was captured by the Krattorians, Sala managed to escape, but was soon found by the Daleks. The Emperor pretended to care about Sala’s people, but what he really wanted to do was set the slaves and the Krattorians against one another.

When Sala returned she offered to take Kest the leader of the Krattorians to the Daleks. This of course had been a plan of the Emperor who ambushed and killed the Krattorians and managed to steal and study their ship. Kest agreed to help the Daleks learn how to fly it as long they hunted down Sala and Astolith. Unfortunately the Daleks were unable to find them and Sala and Astolith managed to find their way to the ship with the remaining slaves and used it to escape Skaro.

Kest and Andor were subsequently exterminated by the Daleks. Though the Daleks had lost the ship they had nevertheless learned the secret of space travel from the Krattorians and it wouldn’t be long before they built their own spaceships.

The Krattorians space vehicles were saucer shaped and thus the Daleks which were modelled on them would be saucer shaped too.

As the Daleks began to prepare their space fleet to begin their war against the rest of the galaxy there was already descent in the Dalek ranks.

Dalek Zeg was a lowly Dalek scientist who had become mutated in a lab accident and became virtually indestructable as a result.

Zeg soon challenged the Emperor himself for control of the Daleks. The Emperor faced him in a duel. Zeg proved to be resistant to many different types of attack from the emperor but ultimately he managed to beat him first by tricking him with a decoy and then tricking him into firing a liquid air tank which finally destroyed Zeg with extreme cold.

Though Zeg had been a traitor his final experiment had actually been a success as the new substance he developed called “Metalert” would make the Dalek casings stronger and allow them to travel through deep space.

Not long afterwards the Daleks prepared their first invasion fleet and soon launched an attack on the planet Alvega. Alvega was inhabited by intelligent plant creatures called Amarylls. They put up a good fight but were no match for the Daleks.

The Daleks invade Alvega.

Whilst they were never able to drive the Daleks off the Amarylls kept battling them refusing to bow to their will. Unfortunately this turned out badly for them as the Daleks eventually decided that the planet was not worth the trouble and destroyed it completely, utterly wiping out the Amarylls.

The next planet the Daleks came to was Solturis. This planet would have better luck against the Daleks. The Daleks attempted to trick its inhabitants into giving them a superweapon they had developed called the Penetray which they ultimately used on the Daleks themselves destroying their invasion fleet.

Following this humiliating defeat the Daleks would have to deal with a major threat on their home planet. A radiation cloud which that had been created in an accident had a devastating effect on Dalek casings and threatened to exterminate the entire Dalek race.

After dealing with the cloud the Daleks soon faced a new enemy when Skaro itself was ironically invaded by a hostile race of aliens, the Monstrons.

The Monstrons wished to enslave the Daleks and were far more advanced than the Daleks at that point too. Indeed they were arguably the first enemies to completely humble the pepper pots as they managed to destroy the Emperor’s secret chamber and even drive the monsters from their city.

Still despite this the Daleks nevertheless managed to destroy them when a lone Dalek soldier sacrificed itself by triggering a volcanic eruption which destroyed the Monstron’s spaceship.

The Daleks drive the Monstrons from Skaro.

Following this the Daleks would soon come into contact with another enemy who was more than a match for them. The Mechanoids.

The Daleks first came upon the Mechanoids when they managed to take control of a single Daleks mind on board a space station the Daleks were building above Skaro. The Mechanoids forced this Dalek to turn on its own kind. It managed to exterminate several Daleks before being restrained. Unfortunately for the Mechanoids who were controlling it, they were soon discovered by the Daleks. Their ship had previously been concealed within a cloud. The Daleks quickly exterminated all of them, but the Mechanoids would retaliate and melted the Dalek saucer.

Both races after this clash declared war upon each other.

A Mechanoid, one of the Daleks major enemies.

The Daleks would conquer the hidden planet Phryne in an effort to aid their war against the Mechanoids.

The Daleks wished to use the planets invisibility technology in their war against the Mechanoids but The Controller of Phryne committed suicide rather than let the technology fall into the Dalek hands. Thus whilst the Daleks did conquer the planet they ultimately did not get what they wanted from it’s people.

The Daleks nevertheless would be able to divert the rogue planet Skardal towards the home planet of the Mechanoids, hoping that the collision would destroy both planets.

With both races now ready for a full scale war across the entire galaxy, the Daleks and the Mechanoid’s activities had been monitored by the inhabitants of the planet Zeros. Terrified at the destruction that would result in a full scale war between the Daleks and the Mechanoids, they sent a robot called 2K to the planet Skaro who was not only able to prevent Skardal from crashing into the Mechanoid’s home planet but was also able to successfully trick both the Daleks and the Mechanoids into calling an impasse, stalling the war for now.

After having successfully found a way to move Skardal the Daleks soon began to work on a way to try and move their own planet. Believing that if they could do this they could turn it into a gigantic spaceship.

The Daleks would next battle a threat from their own planet the Terrorkon. The Terrorkon was a gigantic mutant that lived within the lake of mutations. Having turned on even the Daleks themselves the creature proved problematic for the Daleks underwater defences and so they were forced to exterminate them completely.

The Terrorkon vs the Daleks

Not long after this, the Daleks would soon free by accident three humanoid Daleks, Lodian, Zet and Yvric.

These Daleks were not Kaleds but rather blue skinned humanoid Daleks. Lodian became convinced that the metal Daleks were evil and sought to destroy them whilst Yvric believed that they would appoint them the leader of their race. Ultimately however as soon as he arrived at their base the Daleks killed him.

Lodian and Zet meanwhile prior to being frozen had discovered the location of a planet named earth.  Zet was all for telling the Daleks about the location of the earth in exchange for his own life, but Lodian ultimately sacrificed himself and murdered Zet in the process in order to prevent the Daleks from finding out about the planet.

The Emperor would soon have to deal with a renegade member of his own kind who soon began to embrace his human side. These Daleks remember had not been conditioned to be truly evil creatures like Davros’ Daleks. Instead they had simply adopted that as their way of life, and as a result this Dalek embraced its more compassionate side. It even began to decorate itself with flowers!

Terrified that this could lead to a rebellion among the rest of the Daleks the Emperor was quick to crush the rebellious Dalek, but rather than simply exterminate him he wished to prove to him and the other Daleks how beauty does not last by showing to him how the flowers he admired had already begun to decay.

The One in a Million Dalek and The Emperor

The Daleks would later come into conflict with humanity when a human spaceship called the Guardian accidently strayed too close to Skaro.

The Guardian had hoped to destroy gigantic mutated plants on the planet Arides in order to prevent their seeds from spreading across space. It was the 22nd century and mankind had already spread out across the stars and established colonies on other planets. Though they had not built up an empire like they later would they nevertheless were still a highly advanced race.

The Daleks managed to capture the Guardian and planned to exterminate the ships crew, however their leader Kirid was able to trick the Emperor by convincing him that the seeds would be dangerous to the Daleks as well.

Kirid dupes the Emperor

When the emperor found out that he had been tricked he ordered the humans who have managed to escape’s extermination. Though the Guardian was able to complete its mission and save countless worlds from the Arides plants unfortunately their ship was destroyed by the Daleks.

The Emperor soon began to worry about humanity having observed from Kirid how cunning and how brave they were. Kirid could have simply fled but instead stayed behind to finish the job at the cost of his own life.

The Emperor would very soon come into conflict with humanity once again when the spaceship Starmaker crashed landed on Skaro. The Emperor managed to capture two of the ships crew, two small children Tom and Jennie. Though they were rescued by Captain Fleet, the rest of the crew and the ship itself were all destroyed by the Daleks. Fleet and the two children managed to escape Skaro and make their way back to earth. Unfortunately the damage had been done as the Daleks had already discovered from the starships remains where the planet earth was and the Emperor soon set his sights on it.

War with Humanity

The Daleks invade the earth

Fleet managed to make his way back to earth where he warned humanity of the Daleks. The Daleks meanwhile had managed to remove the magnetic core of their own planet and replace it with a giant motor. This had been the culmination of their experiments to try and move the planet following their successful attempt at moving Skardal.

The Daleks flew Skaro itself into our solar system. There they launched attacks on all of our off world colonies. They managed to conquer Jupiter, Mars, Saturn and Venus.

Unfortunately for them two humans Jeff and Andy whilst searching for their sister were able to start a rebellion on Venus, managing to successfully to destroy their oil well.

Jeff would also later be part of a human mission to infiltrate Skaro where he was able to learn many of the Daleks deepest secrets.

At some point Jeff and Andy managed to rescue Mary from the Daleks clutches and together the three of them would continue to battle the monsters for a long while.

The Daleks would in turn attempt to lure them into traps on both Mars where they attempted to have them killed by android servants and the planet Gurnian where they attempted to feed them to the two headed Horrorkons. Unfortunately for the Daleks this backfired as the Horrokons only fed on metal and thus the Stones were able to turn them on the Daleks themselves.

Eventually there where rebellions on planets like Mars, Venus and Jupiter and humanity began to push the Daleks back.

Jeff, Andy and Mary Stone, the Daleks primary enemies during the early years of their war with humanity.

The Emperor seemingly admitted defeat and agreed to sign a peace treaty with humanity.

Still suspecting that the Daleks wouldn’t give up that easily Mary, Andy and Jeff soon discovered that the Daleks had a secret base on the moon where they planned to detonate several atom bombs which would have torn the entire moon apart and thus devastated the entire earth.

Fortunately the Stone’s were able to foil their plan and destroy the Dalek task force on the moon.

Sadly however just as Mary predicted their war with the Daleks was not over yet.

The Emperor was able to create a plague using captured humans as test subjects. He soon launched it at the earth hidden within small meteorites.

The plague spread across the earth and began to kill millions of people. Whilst all of the earth’s scientists scrambled to try and find a cure, earth was soon cut off from its outer colonies in order to prevent the infection from spreading.

Unfortunately the infection had already spread to many of the outer colonies and they too soon perished. Others that were isolated were soon attacked by the Daleks who completely and utterly blitzed them, killing all of the humans on them.

The scientists on earth where eventually able to find a cure, but unfortunately by that point billions of people including the Stone family had died. With the earth now alone and weak the Daleks launched an all out attack on the planet.

They bombarded the major cities with missiles and completely destroyed all of them. New York in particular was reduced to nothing but a smoking crater.

The Daleks flew over the planet in their transolar discs exterminating people en masse. It didn’t matter if they fought back or not the Daleks still gunned them down in cold blood.

The fall of mankind

Most of humanity was exterminated and the few unlucky survivors were rounded up in camps around the world.

There the Daleks would brutalize them, torture them and experiment on them. Mankind was completely crushed. The earth now belonged to the Daleks.

Masters of Earth

When the Daleks arrive the survivors will envy the dead”

In the year 2164 the Daleks were the undisputed rulers of the earth. Mankind had been driven to near extinction and the few unlucky survivors were kept in Dalek death camps suffering unimaginable pain and torture.

The Daleks had continued to experiment on their human prisoners in all kinds of gruesome ways, but their most successful was the Roboman experiment.

The Daleks cut pieces of their human slaves brains out and replaced them with metal objects. These allowed them to control the humans bodies. Unfortunately the humans were still completely aware, trapped in their own bodies struggling to get control of them, eventually the hardware in their brains caused the robomen to break down destroying their minds. When the Robomen reached this state they would kill themselves.

The Robomen only lasted a few weeks each, nevertheless they would prove vital to the Daleks in helping them maintain their rule of the earth as they acted as expendable foot soldiers.

In spite of this a few human beings did manage to escape the death camps and form tiny little pockets of resistance around the world. Ultimately however these resistance groups were completely ineffective. Unlike the Thals the human beings had no knowledge of the Dalek’s weaknesses and were easily crushed by them.

Also many of the rebels where scattered across the earth and had no way of contacting one another.

The rebels also not only had to content with Daleks and Robomen patrolling the streets, but also wild animals including crocodile’s and rabid dogs that had been let loose after the Dalek invasion. These animals were no threat to them as their jaws could not dent the Dalek’s armour, but they could easily pick off stray humans and often would in the dark.

In addition to this the Daleks also unleashed several mutants from their own planet Skaro on the earth. Again these creatures who were flesh eaters had no interest in the Daleks so they instead feasted on human beings.

The worst was the Slither the pet of the Black Dalek the commandant of the main Dalek death camp. Several unfortunate souls in the camps would actually be fed by the Daleks to the creature which would eat them alive.

Life in the 22nd century was very grim indeed. It consisted of either suffering constant torture at the hands of the sadistic Daleks in the camps, experimented on in their labs, forced into becoming their servants the Robomen or eaten alive by a wild, rabid animal or some horrifying mutation like this

As a result of this many people chose to serve the Daleks willingly in the hopes of getting better treatment from them, whilst others generally tended to only serve themselves and kept a low profile.

Still the resistance movements did persist, but one by one the Daleks were able to crush them until only a very few remained.

Our future is to be dominated by the most evil creatures in the universe.

The Daleks would make use of the resources on the planet earth including humanity to construct new and powerful weapons with which they used to wage war against hundreds of other planets across the Galaxy. They soon built up a massive empire and became arguably the dominant power base within the mutters spiral. They managed to drive out their old rivals the Mechanoids who vowed to get back at them.

The monster had become a true force to be reckoned with and the turning point had been the fall of earth as it had the necessary resources they needed, more so than other planets they had conquered such as Phryne (whose people they had since utterly exterminated) or even their own planet Skaro.

The Daleks wished to transform earth into a spaceship just like they had done to their own planet and soon made plans to remove its magnetic core and replace it with a giant motor that would allow them to pilot the planet anywhere across the universe. This operation was to be carried out in England where the Daleks main base of operations was.

The Daleks ruled over the earth for over 20 years.

Humanity Fights Back

“They dare to tamper with the forces of creation” “They dare and we have got to dare to stop them” The Doctor aids humanity in its darkest hour.

20 or so years after the Dalek invasion the Tardis would take the Doctor and his three companions Susan, Ian and Barbara to the earth. With the Doctor having hoped to take Ian and Barbara back to their own time in 1960’s London, its soon became apparent that they where in a very different era.

Barbara and Susan were taken in by the rebels, whilst the Doctor and Ian were captured by the Daleks. From the Doctors point of view this was his second meeting with the Daleks. He was shocked to see they had survived and deduced that these Daleks where from an earlier point in history than the ones he had met on Skaro.

He was of course wrong just as he had been about the Daleks ancestors being the Dals.

The last tiny pocket of resistance was led by a man named Dortmun. Dortmun had constructed what he believed was a weapon that could shatter the casing of the Daleks. Unfortunately as the rebels found out during an attack on the Dalek saucer the weaponry was still ineffective. Most of the rebels were exterminated in the attack, but a few managed to escape and indeed they were able to rescue the Doctor who was very nearly robotized by the Daleks.

Ian meanwhile managed to escape robotization and stowed away on board the Dalek saucer and was able to make his way to the Dalek death camp.

Barbara meanwhile along with another young earth woman named Jenny fled throughout the ruins of London taking Dortmun who was crippled with them.

Feeling he was holding them back Dortmun ended up sacrificing himself to the Daleks who gunned him down in cold blood. He also tried one last time to create a successful weapon against them which was a failure.

Barbara and Jenny would soon be betrayed by two Dalek collaborators and taken to the death camps. There however they were able to trick the Daleks by claiming that they had proof of plans of a rebellion against the Daleks using Dortmun’s old plans as proof.

Barbara was taken to meet the black Dalek. Whilst there Barbara discovered the Dalek’s weakness. They controlled the Robomen through a single speaker. Barbara hoped that if she could get hold of it she could give it new orders to turn on and attack the Daleks. Unfortunately her attempt to do so was a failure, and the Daleks restrained her and Jenny. Leaving them both to die in their base the creatures were preparing the final part of their plan to drop a bomb into the earth’s core which would destroy it after which they could then place a giant motor in its place. The Daleks left Barbara and Jenny to be killed in the explosion.

Unfortunately for the Daleks the Doctor leading a group of human rebels was able to make his way into the Daleks base where he was able to disconnect their main power source which shut down their casing leaving them immobilized. He also freed Barbara and following her idea gave the Robomen new orders to turn on kill the Daleks all over the world the Robomen turned on the Daleks who thanks to the Doctor were now powerless to fight back and were slaughtered by their own servants as well as the human slaves who joined in.

Ian meanwhile having made his way past the Slither, which he was able to kill by luring down a mine shaft was able to defeat the Daleks by trapping their bomb further up the mine shaft than they intended. When it went off it caused a volcanic eruption that consumed the Dalek base and their main fleet. Whilst the human slaves were able to escape in time the Dalek who were immobilized were destroyed.

With the rest of the Daleks being killed by their own robomen around the world the earth was freed from their rule at long last and mankind could begin to rebuild their shattered world.

The only Dalek who managed to escape the earth was the black Dalek who had a back up power source. After returning to Skaro he gave a full report of why it had failed including an account of a possible alien influence who knew their weaknesses.

Unfortunately for the Daleks they did not have the time to waste in trying to reclaim the earth.

The Mechanoids who had fled to another galaxy had since rebuilt their forces to become stronger than ever again. Launching several counter assaults against the Daleks the Daleks were forced to pull all of their resources into battling their old enemy. Mankind meanwhile was able to rebuild and within a hundred years humanity would be strong again.

War with the Mechanoids and Fall of the Empire

The Daleks encounter one of many, many old enemies.

The Daleks battled with the Mechanoids over the entire galaxy. Though the Mechanoids were utterly ruthless creatures, many races still sided with them over the Daleks. In addition to this as news of humanity’s triumph over the Daleks spread throughout the galaxy it soon inspired similar rebellions on other planets most of which were crushed, but some nevertheless were still successful and gradually as time went on the Dalek empire began to crumble.

Eventually mankind would after having recovered join in the war against the Daleks too. Unable to take the force of so much opposition the Daleks where forced back to their home planet Skaro which they soon flew through space to escape their enemies.

The Mechanoid meanwhile had exhausted all of their supplies so much that they were unable to begin conquering other worlds either. Though they were able to reclaim their home planet, they were mere shadows of their former selves.

The Daleks whilst piloting their planet made plans for a counter attack against their enemies, but unfortunately for them their greatest adversaries after the Doctor, the Thals were finally ready to strike back at them.

That Thals had spent the last several decades hiding under the ground. Unknown to the Daleks who had believed they had exterminated them they had managed to build a thriving civilisation under the ground. The Thals though still worshipping peace above all else knew that they had to stop the Daleks, but up until now there had never been a good enough moment to strike. With the creatures now at their weakest the thals managed to catch the Daleks unaware’s. Striking at their main power source in their city which they still used after all of these years, they managed to shut the Daleks down once more. With the Daleks out of action the Thals returned to the surface.

Black and Chums

The Daleks are put out of action a second time by the Thals.

The planet Skaro would eventually be discovered to where it had been moved to by humanity. The human race soon quarrantined the planet making it a crime for anyone to go there and for 50 years no one would save Jonathan Ladiver who made contact with the Thals and entered into a relationship with and eventually married a Thal woman named Ijayna. Unfortunately he would be arrested for breaking intergalactic law. Despite this he would end up visiting Skaro again very soon under less than pleasant circumstances.

The Return of the Daleks

Droopy Dalek

“Remember, remember the Dalek December. With Paris in ruins and London an Ember. In times of the future when fears are abating, don’t try to forget them the Daleks are waiting. Quietly planning, scheming and hating”

The spaceship starfinder that was supposed to take Ladiver to earth to stand trial was blown off course by an asteroid shower. Forced to make an emergency landing on Skaro and within the Dalek city itself. Not long after the humans arrived the deactivated Daleks were mysteriously re awoken.

Ladiver was accused of being the traitor who had forced them to land on Skaro so that he could reactivate the Daleks by Redaway the ships captain. Ladiver denied this of course and though Redaway did not believe him the team were forced to work together as the Daleks began to pick them off one by one.

Redaway himself was soon captured by the Daleks who brutally tortured him to death.

Redway's not looking too good

Redaway has some not nice encounters with the locals.

Redaway was able to discover during the torture who the real traitor was, but unfortunately after he escaped he died of his wounds before he could tell Ladiver, though he did still nevertheless apologise to Ladiver with his dying breath for having misjudged him.

The traitor was later revealed to be Bob Slater a member of the crew. He had reactivated them with devices that he had placed on their backs. If the Daleks disobeyed him he could deactivate them and thus render the Daleks powerless once again.

Slater had hoped to use the Daleks to conquer the galaxy but unfortunately for him the Daleks whilst pretending to be his docile servants managed to find a way to reactivate their main power source. Slater watched in terror as the devices dropped from the Daleks backs. Realising his hold over them had gone, he tried to flee only to be gunned down by the black Dalek.

Doctor Who's outer space robot people, the Daleks

After killing Slater, the Daleks are in control once again.

The Black Dalek soon made plans to resume their war against the rest of the galaxy. Unfortunately for the Daleks the Thals however would manage to stop them yet again.

Ladiver managed to escape from the city and contact the Thals. It was his own lover Ijayna who managed to defeat the Daleks by reconnecting the main power cable that had been modified so that it drained the Daleks of their power.

Just before the black Dalek was rendered comatose once again he swore to Ladiver that the Daleks would one day return.

Ladiver would spent the rest of his life on Skaro with Ijayna.

The Invasion of Skaro

The new masters of Skaro

Many more decades would pass during which there was peace on Skaro for the first time in centuries. Unfortunately that would end when the Moroks invaded and conquered the planet.

The Moroks had been a race of pitiless conquerors no better than the Daleks. They had emerged recently as a new galactic power.

The Thals put up a good fight against the invaders, but ultimately the Moroks were simply too powerful for them and in a relatively short time the Thals were conquered.

Earth no longer cared for Skaro. Though the planet was still in quarantine they did not wish to waste time and resources protecting it when it became apparent that the Moroks had no interest in reactivating the Daleks and thus they rather callously left the Thals to be conquered.

A few Thals out of desperation reactivated the Daleks who had simply been left in their city once more. The Thals had not killed them as they did not want to be guilty of genocide so they had simply left them and guarded them to make sure the power could never be restored.

The Daleks agreed to form an alliance with the Thals as they soon realized that they had no choice due to the Moroks being a bigger threat. Thus the Daleks and the Thals incredibly would actually work together to take on this common enemy.

The Dalek city became their base of operations and the Daleks at first were able to allow the Thals to strike back at the Moroks. Unfortunately even the Daleks were no match for the Moroks either. Their weaponry could blow open Dalek casings and they bombarded the city regularly too.

One dead Dalek casing was taken to the Morok’s museum and placed in their hall of conquests as a sign of their triumph over the Daleks.

A Dalek casing sits among the Moroks hall of greatest triumphs

Ironically just as they were on the brink on of conquering the Daleks the Moroks would end their chances at ruling Skaro themselves.

The Moroks had detected life signs deep beneath the surface of Skaro. Desperate to find out what it was, they soon tunnelled deep beneath the earth to where the old Kaled Bunker had been.

The Return of Davros’ Daleks

The Moroks get a very nasty surprise when they explore the ruins of the Kaled Bunker.

Davros’ Daleks had remained trapped under the rubble for hundreds of years. Though they had managed to tunnel through parts of the rubble unfortunately they lacked the proper resources to free themselves, though they probably would have been able to eventually. Ultimately it was the Moroks who managed to break through the rubble and freed the Daleks from their imprisonment.

Davros’ Daleks were far more powerful than Zolfian and Yarvelling’s Daleks. Even with the advancements Zolfian and Yarvelling’s Daleks had made, Davros’ Daleks were still much more dangerous.

Davros had been a genius centuries ahead of his time. His Daleks had a virtually limitless power source that was contained within each individual Dalek meaning they were not dependent on a single power source like Zolfian and Yarvellings. The metal Davros had used for them was far stronger too. The Morok’s weaponry simply bounced off of their casings. They also had a hover pad built into the bottom of their casings. This was far more efficient than the Transolar Discs Zolfian and Yarvelling’s Daleks used. The transolar discs were quite slow moving and could easily be shot out of the sky by the Moroks.

The hover pad however enabled the Daleks to move at rapid speeds throughout the sky and it was built into them too. Finally Davros’ Daleks fire power was far more powerful too.

Davros’ Dalek slaughtered the Moroks who had ventured into the bunker effortlessly and quickly left their bunker and began to attack the alien invaders across all of Skaro. The Moroks were not even able to inflict one casualty on Davros’ Dalek force who ruthlessly dispatched them and sent them fleeing from Skaro.

Davros’ Daleks had saved their home planet. Unfortunately they soon turned their attention towards the Thals and Zolfian and Yarvelling’s Daleks.

Davros’ Daleks viewed Zolfian and Yarvelling’s Daleks as inferior for many reasons. Not only were their casings weaker, but they were earlier in the Kaled mutation cycle and most importantly their minds had not been conditioned either. Though ruthless and xenophobic they still had traces of other emotions and feelings and even their own separate identities and names such as Dalek Zeg. Davros’ Daleks viewed these as being aspects of lesser creatures and demanded that they allow themselves to be both mutated and reconditioned mentally to be like them.

At first Zolfian and Yarvelling’s Daleks refused and even sided with the Thals to try and destroy these new Daleks, but ultimately when it became apparent just how powerful they were, Zolfian and Yarvelling’s Daleks surrendered. Most of the Thals were exterminated though once again  a few managed to take cover deep underground though they were forced to flee even deeper this time.

All of Zolfian and Yarvelling’s Daleks would be further mutated to the point were physically they were identical to Davros’s Daleks, their minds were also purged of all emotions except hate like Davros’s Daleks and all traces of their identities were wiped too. Their casings were also improved too.

Now there was only one unified Dalek race.

Zolfian and Yarvelling Dalek

Davros Dalek

Unified Dalek

The Emperor and the leader of Davros’s Daleks who had personally gunned down Davros agreed to merge together into the one creature which was considerably more intelligent than any other Dalek and now required a much larger casing.

The New Fused Emperor

With Skaro once again theirs, the new an improved Dalek race piloted Skaro out of the galaxy and into a solar system of uninhabitated planets so that they could begin plans to resume their war against the rest of the cosmos in peace.

Discovering Time Travel

“Daleks cannot be defeated”. The Daleks follow their greatest enemy through all of time and space itself.

Davros’ Daleks had been aware of the Doctors existence from the very beginning. Though the Doctor had been able to destroy the tape Davros had forced the Doctor to make, explaining the reason for every Dalek defeat, pieces of old CCTV footage of the Doctor debating with his companions on whether or not to destroy them had survived.

In addition to this before his death Davros had managed to program into them knowledge of the Doctor too. Though again he did not manage to program into their minds the reason for every Dalek defeat, he nevertheless gave them vital knowledge of their most dangerous adversary.

After taking over Zolfian and Yarvelling’s Daleks they soon noticed that the Doctor had been present at two very important events in their history.

There had been accounts as well as footage of an alien being who called himself the Doctor when the Thals had managed to defeat the Daleks and the black Daleks account of their defeat on earth also mentioned a possible alien intelligence that sabotaged their power system, as no human being would have had that knowledge. Once again surviving CCTV footage also showed exactly the same figure who had been on Skaro many years earlier in the Dalek base.

Thus the Dalek Emperor decided that the Doctor must be found and exterminated. He was clearly their most dangerous enemy who knew things about them that even they themselves did not. The Emperor ordered that all priorities were to be placed on finding the Doctor.

Their war against other life forms such as humanity could only resume after the Doctor was eliminated.

In order to find their greatest enemy the Daleks would need to discover time travel and thus for the next few decades all of their resources were put into this.

Many of their early time travel experiments were dismal failures and the time capsule’s were lost. Eventually however the Daleks were able to build a working time capsule which was christened the “DARDIS.” This capsule could travel anywhere to any planet at any point in its history just like the Doctors.

The Daleks did not wish to use it to alter their own history. Scared that doing so might end up damaging their own timeline in ways they couldn’t imagine. For instance if Davros’ Daleks altered the events of the Dalek Invasion of earth they may very well have changed history so that they were never freed from the bunker.

The Daleks were able to track the Doctor as through their own experiments they learned that time travel creates a form of damage in the vortex itself, a small rip and thus by simply tracking similar tears through the vortex they could locate another time vessel.

A squad of scientist Daleks were dispatched to locate the Doctor throughout all of time and space.

A new Dalek ranking system had been established with the Emperor at the top, the black Daleks next in line, the silver Daleks meanwhile acted as the scientists whilst the grey Daleks were the warriors.

Thus a group of silver Daleks were dispatched to track the Doctor down and kill him.

The Daleks time machine, the DARDIS. Like the TARDIS it was bigger on the inside than the outside.

The Daleks pursued the Doctor across many different planets and time zones.

The first planet they both landed on was the desert world Aridus. Aridus had once been an ocean planet, but when its two suns moved closer together then its oceans dried up, killing most life on the planet except for the peaceful fish like Aridians and the flesh eating Mire beasts.

The Daleks enslaved the Aridians threatening to exterminate their population unless they aided them in finding the Doctor and his companions. Fortunately the Doctor and co managed to give them the slip and make their way back to the TARDIS.

The Daleks followed them through time first to 1960’s Manhattan and then to the Mary Celeste where it was revealed that the Daleks had been responsible for the famous mystery surrounding the boat as their appearance terrified the ships crew and caused the crew to flew into the oceans waters.

The Daleks next followed the Doctor to a haunted house! In truth however the haunted house was merely a fun fair attraction far in earth’s future. The robots of famous monsters had been damaged and soon began to attack the guest hence why it had been shut down.

Unfortunately for the Daleks travelling in the vortex had affected their weaponry so that it was low on power. Thus their weapons were completely useless against these mechanical replica’s who soon began to attack them whilst the Doctor and his companions were able to slip away quietly.

The Daleks would next follow him to the home planet of their sworn enemies the Mechanoids.

Here the Daleks actually managed to create an android replica of the Doctor which they used to try and infiltrate and kill his party. The robot ultimately failed however as it referred to the Vicki the Doctors earlier companion as Susan. Susan had stopped travelling with the Doctor by this point but the last time the Doctor had encountered the Daleks she had been his companion.

Though the Doctor managed to dispose of the robot the Daleks managed to corner him and his companions in a small cave. With their being seemingly no escape, the Doctor, Ian, Barbara and Vicki were saved at the last minute by a Mechanoid. The Mechanoids initially believed that the Daleks had arrived here for them, however they were soon surprised to see that the monster were pursuing these humanoid creatures and thus they captured them in order to find out why.

The Mechanoids also had a human prisoner Steven Taylor.

Steven’s spaceship had crashed landed on Mechanus and the Mechanoid’s after capturing him tampered with his memory. They made him believe that they were harmless robots that had been built by humanity to help them colonize other worlds. In truth the Mechanoids were ruthless robots created from a far away galaxy, but they made him believe that they were simply harmless robots so that they could observe his behaviour. The Mechanoids having slowly begun to rebuild their forces wished to conquer earth, but in order to do that they would first need to learn about human beings and thus they studied and even experimented on Steven (wiping his memory of the experimentations) to learn about their weaknesses and strengths.

The Daleks soon followed the Doctor and his companions into the city. They didn’t care about the Mechanoids any more with their main target instead being the Doctor. The Mechanoids not wanting to lose their valuable prisoners attacked the Daleks and a fight soon broke out between them.

Though the Mechanoids were more numerous these Daleks were far more powerful than the previous Daleks they had fought. The Daleks had managed to fix their weapons after their visit to the “haunted house” and were now at full power.

In order to destroy their archenemies the Daleks battle their other archenemies.

Whilst the Daleks and the Mechanoids clashed the Doctor and his companions fled the city along with Steven, though the Doctor also left a powerful bomb, stolen ironically from the Morok’s space museum which destroyed the city eliminating both the Daleks and the Mechanoids.

Both the Daleks and the Mechanoids are consumed in the flames as the Doctor destroys their city.

This was a huge setback for the Mechanoids as their main base of operations had been destroyed. Thus their plans for conquest had to be put on hold for now.

The Doctor would use the Daleks time machine to get his two companions Ian and Barbara back home to 1960’s London where they destroyed the creatures time machine.

Thus not only had the Daleks attempt to kill the Doctor been a dismal failure but they had lost their only working time capsule too.

Back home Ian and Barbara were sadly unable to return to their old jobs having been away for 2 years. They soon discovered much to their surprise that some people in 1960’s knew about the Daleks. Whilst they had been away Terry Nation had discovered the very first Dalek chronicles and there had been a mild sensation about the monsters.

At one point even the Beatles got in on their popularity when John Lennon posed with a recreation of a Dalek.

An example of the growing popularity of the Daleks in 60’s.

Nation and Whitaker however at that point had only translated the Chronicles which told of the creation of Zolfian and Yarvelling’s Daleks and their early exploits just before they found the earth.

Ian and Barbara contacted Nation and informed him of what they knew about the Daleks and soon came to search for other Dalek Chronicles. Soon a film company approached them wanting to cash in on the popularity of the Daleks. Ian, Barbara and Nation would serve as advisors to the two films titled “Doctor Who and the Daleks”, “Daleks Invasion Earth 2150AD”. Sadly the films producers made huge deviations from Ian and Barbara’s accounts and portrayed the Doctor as merely an eccentric human scientist named Doctor Who. The first film was a very mild success, but the second film was a huge flop. The Dalek craze had begun to die down and eventually within time the study of the Dalek chronicles faded into obscurity once more until the stealing of the earth a good 40 years later. Ian and Barbara themselves would move on and get jobs as teachers once more, but their work still proved pivotal in the early study of the Dalek Chronicles.

The only films to be based on events that haven’t happened yet.

There was actually a third Dalek film made titled “Daleks vs Mechons” sadly however all copies of this film were lost in a fire at the studio.

All that survives is the film’s trailer.

It is believed that one copy of this film may survive in UNIT’s black archive, but this has never been verified and most likely never will be as anyone who leaves the archive has their mind wiped.

Planet Vulcan

Two of the Daleks that would ravage the earth colony on Vulcan.

One of the Dalek time capsule’s that had been lost in their experiments had fallen through the time vortex and fell several hundred years in their past on the planet Vulcan. There it became buried in a mercury swamp.

The time vortex had drained the ship and its 3 Dalek occupants of their power. Despite the Daleks now having a self generating power source, it had managed to disrupt it and rendered the Daleks comatose.

They would remain under the swamp for well over a hundred years. In the meantime human beings would come to settle on the planet and build a large colony there.

The Dalek spacecraft would eventually be discovered by the humans on Vulcan. This was before from the humans point of view the Dalek’s war with humanity so these human beings had no idea who or what a Dalek was.

Their main scientist Lesterson whilst unable to repair the Daleks power generator within its casing was able to link the Dalek up to one in his lab which gave it a new power source. Unfortunately as soon as the Dalek came to life the first thing it did was exterminate one of Lesterson’s assistant. The murder was covered up however by Janley who wanted to use the Dalek for her own purposes. She was part of a group of rebels who wanted to take control of the colony.

As soon as Lesterson revealed the Dalek to the colonists they were excited. The Daleks pretended to be docile and friendly little robots even chanting “I am your servant” over and over again. Unfortunately for the Daleks the Doctor had arrived on Vulcan at the same time. The Doctor was travelling with his companions Ben and Polly two people from modern day England and he had just regenerated into his second incarnation.

The Second Doctor, Ben and Polly meet the Daleks

The Doctor tried to warn the colonists of the Dalek’s true nature but sadly they didn’t listen and the Daleks were able to manipulate them into giving them the materials they needed to create more Dalek casings as well as create an incubation chamber that could produce multiple Dalek clones.

Very soon the Daleks had a full army and launched an attack on the humans whom they had managed to pit against each other. The Daleks slaughtered the majority of the colonists who were completely powerless to stop them including Lesterson himself who been driven insane with guilt when he realized only too late that the Daleks were monsters.

Fortunately the Doctor would be able to defeat them once again when he managed using the device Lesterson had connected them too to give the Daleks a power overload destroying every Dalek casing on the colony.

Unfortunately most of the colonists had been exterminated at that point though the few survivors tried to find a way to summon earth. Unfortunately for them after the Doctor left a single Dalek that had managed to survive exterminated the last of the colonists. It then managed to repair the Dalek time capsule enough to return to the Daleks own time.

Upon returning the Dalek informed the Emperor that the Doctor had changed his appearance.

When the Dalek first scanned the newly regenerated Second Doctor it was confused at first. The internal scan showed that he had two hearts a unique feature which only the Doctor had. The Daleks knew that the Doctor could somehow change his appearance as the CCTV footage of the 4th Doctor obviously looked different to the first doctor..

The Emperor of the Daleks soon began to view humanity as being the Daleks most dangerous adversaries. He had noticed that the Daleks had always lost against humanity all the time. Not only during their invasion of earth, but also almost all of the Doctors companions had been earthlings too. Believing that there was some quality that human beings had that allowed them to always beat the Daleks and wanted to try and isolate it. At the same time he still wanted rid of the Doctor and formulated a plan that would allow him to dispose of both humanity and the time lord.

The Daleks soon detected another rip in the time vortex. Their own time machine had been destroyed by Ian and Barbara and it would take them a long to build another. The machine that had travelled to Vulcan meanwhile had been so badly damaged that it only was able to make one trip back. They still had the ability to trace damage to the vortex that was caused by time travel, but no actual time travel facilities left themselves.

The Daleks hoped that if they could find this rip in the vortex itself then they might be able to find a time vessel as they knew that a rip in the vortex can only be created by a time machine. They headed towards the rip and discovered that it was actually a wormhole that had been created by a Victorian scientist named Edward Waterfield. Waterfield had attempted to try and find a way to travel in time but had instead simply created a rip in time which lead to the future. The Daleks made their way through the rip to Waterfield’s home era and captured his daughter. Threatening to kill her unless Watefield helped them find the Doctor and lure him into a trap, Waterfield with much regret had no choice but to assist them.

The Daleks in Victorian England

Waterfield travelled forward to 1960’s London. The Daleks knew he would be here as they were able to once again track damage to the vortex which they realized had been caused by the TARDIS. Waterfield stole the TARDIS and lured the Second Doctor and his companion Jamie across all of London until he managed to gas them after which he dragged them through his own time machine which had been modified by the Daleks to Victorian London.

The Daleks explained to the Doctor that they wanted him to try and isolate the human factor that had always allowed human beings to triumph over them and transplant it into the Daleks. The Doctor possessed a far greater technical knowledge than the Daleks and thus they wished for the Doctor to carry out these experiments.

The Daleks threatened both Jamie his companion and Victoria’s lives unless he agreed to help them and faced with no choice he carried out their experiments and actually managed to isolate the human factor and transplant it into three Daleks. Christening them Alpha, Beta and Omega these Daleks became compassionate, emotional and even friendly and child like.

After the Doctor, Jamie, Victoria and Waterfield were transported to Skaro the Emperor revealed to the Doctor that he no longer wanted the human factor. Considering the experiment a failure due to the Daleks human qualities he nevertheless now hoped to isolate the Dalek factor, the factor that makes Daleks ruthless, xenophobic and vicious. He hoped to transplant the Dalek factor into the Doctor himself making him their servant. The Doctor would then reveal all the secrets of his people to them and would using his time machine change the history of the planet earth by spreading the Dalek factor throughout all of human history. Though the Daleks had been wary of changing history they believed that if the Doctor was their servant he would be able to do it in a way that would not change their own history.

Again with no choice as they threatened his friends the Doctor was forced to carry out their plan and the Dalek factor was soon transplanted into a human being named Maxtible. Maxtible had helped create Waterfield’s time tunnel. Unlike Waterfield however he served the Daleks willingly as they had promised him the secret of Alchemy.

The experiment was a success as Maxtible became a Dalek in all but shape. The Emperor then attempted to transplant it into the Doctor, but the Doctor had managed to trick him. He had created the machine so that it would only work on human beings. With the Doctor being a time lord it did not work on him, but he allowed the emperor to believe it had. The Doctor freed the three humanized Daleks. The Emperor was scared that the human factor would spread like a plague across the Dalek race and the Doctor suggested to him that every Dalek should instead go through the Dalek factor machine. The Emperor agreed but unfortunately little did he know the Doctor switched it so that when the Daleks went through it they became infected with the human factor.

With hundreds of Daleks now affected with the human factor they began to question the orders of the ruthless Dalek Emperor and a civil war soon broke out. Sadly over the course of the war Waterfield was exterminated by the Daleks. Dying in The Doctors arms the Doctor promised the dying man that he would look after his daughter Victoria. Jamie, The Doctor and Victoria managed to flee the city as it erupted into flames. The Doctor looked down as the city of the Daleks was completely and utterly destroyed in the war and told Jamie that he believed he had seen the final end of the Daleks.

The Final End?

The Daleks were not completely destroyed but they had been driven to very brink of extinction.  It would be a long while before they managed to rebuild and pose a threat to anyone again.

Next up we will be taking a look at the second phase of Dalek history. We will see how the monsters managed to recover from the civil war, master time travel and build a new empire stronger than the one before it.

WHY THE DALEKS ARE THE MOST BADASS ALIENS IN ALL OF SCI FI

In this article I am going to hopefully demonstrate to all of you why the Daleks are the most powerful and dangerous monsters in all of sci fi. I am going to match them up against many other famous alien races such as the Predators, the Martians from War of the Worlds, and the Empire from Star Wars.

Of course I am not saying that this makes the Daleks better villains than any of these characters. At the end of the day no one can say for sure who is the best villain. They all accomplish what they set out to do. The Daleks are the best metaphor for race hatred, the Alien works best in its claustrophobic setting, the Martians are the forebears meanwhile of almost all alien invaders in science fiction.

Still hopefully to those of you who wonder why the Daleks are seen as so scary and dangerous, this will show how the Daleks are easily capable of kicking the shit out of any other alien monster you can think of.

Lets get started then shall we.

1/ Daleks vs Well’s Martians

Well’s Martians ironically were one of the main inspirations on the Daleks. Both are octopus like creatures that house themselves within metallic armour. Also War of the Worlds has been a direct influence on many Dalek stories from The Dalek Invasion of Earth to Journey’s End.

Well’s Martians are truly formidable beasts. They walk around in gigantic tripods that can lift objects as large as trees and toss them through the air as though they were nothing, though their primary weapon is a gigantic heat ray, that can vaporize people and even metallic objects like tanks and boats into nothing.

So how would they fair against the Daleks? Well sadly not great.

To start with the Martians are clearly quite bad planners. It is hinted in the novel that they spent years preparing their invasion of earth, yet despite this they are felled by the common cold!

Clearly they didn’t do that much research into the planet after all. The Daleks meanwhile are expert planners. The Dalek Time Controller as seen in the Dark Eyes audio’s can spend years hiding in the time vortex studying his enemies, with no time having passed on the other side.

In a war between both races the Daleks would obviously study the Martians try and find their weaknesses, whilst the Martians would just wander in there thinking their heat ray could destroy the Daleks. Lets face it they only won against humanity because they were so far in advance of them they didn’t need to do planning. They could just show up and blast them and even then because they didn’t think it through they still ultimately lost against a Victorian with a runny nose!

The Daleks meanwhile have devised strategies that have allowed them to take on and actually win against the time lords.

Also finally look at what the Martians greatest weakness was. Their vulnerability to germs. They have no defences whatsoever against even the most minor infections.

Now look at one of the Daleks greatest strengths. Chemical warfare. In The Dalek Invasion of Earth the Daleks created a plague that very nearly drove humanity to extinction. In Planet of the Daleks they created a plague which could have wiped out all life in the Galaxy.

In Death to the Daleks they created a plague missile that could have exterminated all life on Exxilon.

So with this in mind yeah I think its safe to say that the could easily whip up something to destroy the Martians in no time.

Really Daleks vs Martians as far as I’m concerned would be a curb stomp battle. Daleks observe the Martians from a far, then find out that they can be killed by someone sneezing so they launch a plague missile like the one’s they used to conquer earth and bam. Martian race is exterminated.

2/ Daleks vs The Empire

The Empire are the main antagonists from the Star Wars franchise. Though probably among the most iconic of all sci fi baddies, these guys in a fight with the Daleks would still get their asses handed to them by Skaro’s finest for the following reasons.

1/ The Empire is tiny compared to the Dalek Empire

The empire we are told rules a galaxy far, far away. That’s the point though the Empire covers ONE galaxy. The Dalek empire meanwhile is said to cover several galaxies. Now only does this show the Daleks have more fire power to expand their empire across several different galaxies but also the Empire remember fell after trying to control one galaxy. The Dalek empire though it has suffered several set backs is still going strong as seen in 2014’s Into the Dalek.

2/ Destroying a planet is nothing to the Daleks

In Army of Ghosts/Doomsday the Doctor tells Mickey that had the Daleks not been able to use the touch of a time traveller to open the Genesis ark they would have drawn energy from the sun which would have blown it up and destroyed the entire solar system. That’s what four Daleks could have done, destroyed our entire solar system to open something! In the Stolen Earth/ Journey’s End the Daleks steal planets from all across time and space. Even the Doctor who is a time lord, a member of a species who have turned time travel (something the Empire can’t do by the way) into a game for children says “that is fearsome technology”.

Added to that in the 12th Doctor story Into the Dalek, the 12th Doctor mentions that the Daleks have destroyed billions of stars, which means they have destroyed entire solar systems and all of the planets in them too.

In Remembrance of the Daleks the 7th Doctor mentions that one Dalek spaceship can crack open the planet earth like an egg. And that is a ship piloted by only 400 Daleks.

Finally in Death to the Daleks the Doctor states that its the Daleks usual “Scorch the planet policy”

So clearly the act of destroying an entire planet is NOTHING to the Daleks when four of them can do it just to open something!

For the Empire however as we can see in a New Hope destroying a planet is a pretty big deal for them. It represents the pinnacle of what they can do. The Death Star is the ultimate weapon the Empire has, it took them years to build and they never have that type of power again. Four Daleks can already do several times what the Death star could do.

3/ The Reality Bomb is sooooooooooo much more badass than the Deathstar

The death star is a pretty impressive weapon. It can destroy an entire world at the push of a button and is the size of a moon.

Still its laughable compared to the Reality Bomb the Daleks ultimate weapon. The reality bomb to start with is contained within the Crucible a spaceship the size of a planet.

Also the Reality bomb which I might add is powered by stolen planets can destroy every universe across all of time and space itself!  Really show the death star next to the Crucible and I’d be embarrassed for any representative of the Empire. Their ultimate weapon is not even half the size of the Daleks and added to that it’s biggest achievement is that it can destroy one planet. One planet in one solar system at a time as opposed to every single planet and star and every solar system and every galaxy and every universe ever to have existed across all of reality itself!

Really this is a curb stomp battle in favour of Skaro’s finest.

I reckon the Cult of Skaro could take out the Empire by themselves.

Daleks vs Xenomorph’s

This is another curb stomp battle in favour of Terry Nation’s favourite creations. The Xenomorph’s are obviously dangerous monsters, but unfortunately if they were ever to go up against the Daleks they”d be out of their league.

To start with the Xenomorphs are just animals. They rely on brute strength and their strength isn’t even enough to tear their way out of human built spaceships. It seems very unlikely with this in mind that they would be able to tear their way through a Dalek spaceship or even a Dalek casing. Remember how powerful a Dalek casing is. It can withstand blasts from Cybermen death rays without any effect whatsoever.

Added to that the Daleks can fly and thus could just fly to a height where the Xenomorphs couldn’t find them.

Also the Xenomorph’s great advantage is that they can infect others through their face huggers which as their name would suggest leap on to their victims faces and lay an egg in their stomach which bursts out of their chest.

The thing is though the face huggers couldn’t do this to the Daleks. To start with they have no face, second of all how on earth could they get through the Daleks casing. They have been kept out by glass!

Also the Xenomorph’s other big advantage their acidic blood wouldn’t be of any uses to them either. The Daleks death rays seem to work in two ways. Either they destroy you internally or they vaporize you completely.

Either option would prevent the Aliens acid blood from being used. If the Daleks shot them then the death ray would scramble their organs but it wouldn’t make them bleed. A Dalek gun would zap them and leave their bodies unscathed. Remember the Xenomorph’s are vulnerable to energy weapons too as the Predator’s laser weapon was capable of destroying them easily. Also remember that a Dalek weapon at full blast can level an entire building or melt a spaceship as seen in Planet of the Daleks and The Stolen Earth. A Predator ray gun can’t do that!

Either that or it would be like when the Daleks shot Missy or the new Paradigm Daleks shot the old and vaporized them completely which would leave no blood behind.

Also even if they did cut themselves then whose to say their acid could melt the Daleks casing. Dalek casing’s have forcefields remember that can melt bullets. Whose to say that the acid wouldn’t be reduced to nothing. If special bastic headed bullets which are presumably stronger than the regular kind were unable to get through the forcefield then acid most likely wouldn’t. Remember that regular bullets are enough to blow up an aliens entire head!

Finally the Xenomorph’s have no technology to fight back against. Thus the Daleks could easily just nuke a planet they are on any way.

The Daleks would dispose of them effortlessly.

Daleks vs Shadows

Now again the Shadows whilst great villains are clearly outmatched by the Daleks. To them exploring beyond the galaxy, the “Galactic Rim” is a big deal. The Daleks have destroyed countless galaxies and have explored all of time and space itself. So looking at it this way then yes the Shadows are obviously not a match for the Daleks.

However I would also like to point out that the Daleks can match the Shadow’s in terms of manipulation too. That was one of the Shadows great strength was the way they were able to manipulate people such as Londo. The Daleks meanwhile we have seen manipulate individuals such as their own creator Davros, Mavic Chen, Lesterson, The Master and even the Doctor himself! They managed to trick the Doctor their most hated enemy into actually bringing about their resurrection.

Meanwhile in the Parting of the Ways we see how one Dalek the Emperor is able to manipulate all of human history, turning it from the 4th great and bountiful human empire to a corrupt, decadent empire. That’s pretty impressive. Imagine if one Shadow had been able to completely change the course of human history forever!

So yes not only are the Daleks more powerful and dangerous, but I’d say they at least give the shadows a run for their money in terms of being sneaky and manipulative.

Daleks vs The Predators

Once again much like the Shadows the Daleks are obviously far more advanced than the Predators. The Daleks can time travel the Predators can not, the Daleks can rip apart entire solar systems the Predators can not etc.

Still in a one on one fight I think the Predators probably would fare better than most of the other monsters here. One advantage they have over the Daleks is that they can turn themselves invisible something which the Daleks never managed if you’ll remember from Planet of the Daleks.

Still I think the Daleks could probably find a way round this. Later Dalek stories show the creatures as being able to detect other life forms when they can’t see them, so with this in mind they most likely could trace the Predators. Also on top of that the Predators wouldn’t actually be able to see the Daleks. The Daleks are encased in metal casings. Now remember that the Predator sees though infra red heat vision and Arnold Schwarzanegger was able to hide from it by covering himself in mud.

If mud is enough to make Arnie invisible from the Predator then a Dalek mutant which would be the only part of its body that would radiate heat would be completely shielded by the casing.

This coupled with the fact that the Daleks can fly a big advantage in any fight means that the Daleks could just zap them from above and the Predators wouldn’t even be able to see them. It would be yet another curb stomp battle in favour of the Daleks.

Daleks vs Treens

The Treens were the main villains from the British comic strip Dan Dare. They are arguably the most influential race of aliens in all of sci fi after Well’s Martians. Though Well’s Martians were the first invaders the Treens were the first race who were shown to have an empire and a fully functioning society like the Daleks, the Klingons etc.

They were a massive inspiration on the Cybermen, the Sontarans and yes the Daleks with their leader the Mekon being the inspiration for Davros.

Sadly despite their prominence within the genre the Treens once again would be lucky to last 10 minutes against the Dalek Empire.

The Teens for most of Dan Dare are barely a threat beyond their own solar system. Though some strips show them expanding beyond that, by and large the Treen empire consists of one solar system.

4 Daleks as we saw in Doomsday could destroy our entire solar system. Thus 4 Daleks could wipe out the Treens.

Added to that one Dare strip makes a big deal of the Mekon having managed to control a black hole. The Daleks meanwhile fought the species that created black holes the Time Lords and actually beat them!

Also the Treens only conquered the earth once. The Daleks have done it now 4 times 2 of which were when earth was far more advanced than when the Treens did it.

So yeah again there’s no contest really.

Also in terms of being bat shit mental the Mekon is no match for Davros. The Mekon wants to take over the universe so he can study it. Davros wants to burn it all into nothing!

Daleks vs Star Trek Races

Sorry Trekkies (of which I am one) but its true that the Daleks would completely and utterly own the shit out of all the major Star Trek races. Don’t believe me see below.

Klingons

Come on here this wouldn’t be a battle. It would be a mass slaughter.

The Klingons have an empire which spans maybe a galaxy or a couple of galaxies at the most. To them the Genesis Device which can create or destroy a planet is a huge thing for them.

Again need I point out that 4 Daleks are powerful enough to destroy several planets, and that their empire has destroyed several billion galaxies and that they can also time travel too. Plus the Klingons are so concerned about honour where as the Daleks just don’t give a fuck about anything except destroying all other life forms.

Also look at how badly the Klingons got owned by V,Ger a machine that could have destroyed the entire planet earth. If they get owned by a machine that destroyed an entire world, then how are they going to do against the reality bomb or whatever device it was the Daleks used to teleport planets across all of time and space.

Again its a curb stomp.

Romulans

Again these guys wouldn’t stand a chance against the Daleks. Romulus was destroyed in Star Trek 2009 by an exploding sun. The cult of Skaro could easily have destroyed Romuluses sun the way that they would have destroyed Earth’s. Also again the Daleks could have just snatched Romulus like they did earth and blitz it with bombs that could shatter whole continents as seen in The Parting of the Ways. Or they could unleash a chemical weapon that could wipe them out like earth. Basically there are about a million ways the Daleks could destroy these guys.

Borg

Arguably the most formidable of all the big Star Trek villains sadly they too would be no match for Skaro’s finest.

The Borg have a tough time against the Federation who are able to hold them back and eventually beat them. The Daleks meanwhile when dealing with the fourth great and bountiful human empire decimate the planet earth. I might add the Borg outnumbered the Federation as they had trillions of drones, where as in the Daleks case when they took on the fourth great and bountiful human empire (which was more advanced than the Federation) they numbered half a million whilst on Earth at that point humanity numbered 98 billion!

The result of that fight? One Dalek was temporarily blinded. Humanity was driven virtually to extinction as the Daleks blitzed whole continents of people out of existence.

Also on top of that the Daleks have mastered time travel to a far greater extent than the Borg. The Borg went on one time travel mission whilst the Daleks have mastered it to the point that individual Daleks can emergency temporal shift through time.

Also the Daleks again can destroy stars, catapult planets, break down the barriers between universes, shatter continents from space, crack open planets like an egg.

It is true that the Borg can upgrade themselves, but it is stated that there is a limit and since a single Dalek death ray can level an entire building or melt a spaceship or as seen in the Magician’s Apprentice destroy the TARDIS (remember the TARDIS can survive being buried under several billion tons of lava, and dropped off of several thousand foot mountain without so much as a scratch) then its safe to say that they could plow their way through several Borg drones effortlessly at once.

Are you still not convinced?

Okay take these FACTS into consideration.

In the Doctor Who/Star Trek crossover Assimilation the Cybermen kicked the shit out of the Borg.

Here it is.

Not only do the Cybermen humble the Borg, but it is also revealed that had the Doctor not stopped the Cybermen then they would have first of all converted the Borg and then gone on to convert the Klingons, the Romulans, the Carassians, the Ferenghi, pretty much all of the Star Trek universe.

So the Cybermen are far more badass than the Borg, the Klingons, the Romulans and the Cardassians.

How did the Cybermen fair against the Daleks again?

As Rose Tyler said “5 million Cybermen easy”.

Also technically the Daleks very nearly wiped out the Star Trek Universe in the Doctor Who story The Stolen Earth/Journey’s End.

It was revealed in the Doctor Who/Star Trek crossover that Doctor Who and Star Trek take place in alternate universes to one another.

Now in Stolen Earth/Journey’s End the Daleks threaten to destroy every universe with their reality bomb. Had they not been stopped then they would have succeeded. Rose Tyler comes from an alternate time line where the bomb has gone off and destroyed all realities, though she is able to travel back just as the blast reaches her universe and help prevent the bomb from going off.

Thus had Rose been unsuccessful then the bomb would have destroyed the Star Trek universe and all of the Star Trek aliens, the Klingons, the Cardassians and the Romulans with it.

Nothing the Klingons have ever done has threatened the Daleks.

Therefore its obvious that the Daleks are far more powerful.

Also remember that it is established that the Doctor Who Universe is a parallel universe to the Marvel and therefore the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Furthermore another Star Trek crossover establishes that Trransformers takes place in another universe to Star Trek and therefore Doctor Who.

Also a DC/Marvel crossover establishes that DC Comics takes place in an alternate universe to Marvel too, as does the DC animated Universe. It is established however that DC and Marvel take place in separate multiverses. Still they are part of the same Omniverse

Thus the Whoniverse, the Trekverse, the DC Universe the Marvel universe, the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the Transformersverse are all part of one great big multiverse.

Furthermore depending on how seriously you take the Buffy series 8 comic book seriously then Doctor Who and Buffy take place in the same canon as the Tenth Doctor and Rose make a cameo in it.

According to Joss Whedon Buffy series 8 is canon remember. Makes me wonder what Buffy was doing the night the earth was stolen. I guess she and the Scoobies must have been doing their best to fight the Daleks.

So with this in mind had the Daleks not been stopped in using their reality bomb then the following aliens and monsters would have all been destroyed by the Daleks.

They all would have been turned to dust by the reality bomb had it not been for the Doctor.

Technically the most important story in Doctor Who, Marvel, DC, the MCU, Star Trek, Transformers and possibly Buffy the Vampire Slayers canon. The main characters in all of those franchises were in danger from what the Daleks were doing in this story!

Other Doctor Who Monsters

The Daleks have thrashed pretty much every other major Doctor Who villain you can think of.

The Cybermen as we have seen got their assess handed to them quite badly at Canary Wharf, the Zygons, the Autons, their home planets where destroyed by the Daleks, the Time Lords would have lost the time war had it not been for the Doctor cheating.

And finally at the siege of Trenzalore the Daleks beat out the Cybermen, the Sontarans, the Silurians, the Autons, the Ice Warriors, the Slitheen, the Judoon, the Terileptiles, the Silence and the Weeping Angels all at once!

Thus they are unquestionably the Doctors most powerful and dangerous enemies.

Conclusion

No power in this or any universe can stand against the Daleks. They are the ultimate monster in every conceivable way. Face facts when it comes to blowing shit up and committing acts of cosmic genocide then they are unquestionably the supreme beings.

Thanks for reading.

Why Representation Doesn’t Matter And Saying It Does Is Harmful

Now before I start, one thing I’d like to make clear in this article is that I am not saying that we shouldn’t bother making any new films with female heroes or non white heroes.

Make as many female or black heroes as you want. I don’t care. If they are great I’ll love them.

This article will instead be looking at people who artificially try and bring about representation and force it into everything more for the sake of their own ego than anything else. I will also be looking at how representation though once important in the ongoing struggle for equality, is really no longer an issue at all. I feel we do live in a genuine meritocracy.

I realise that is a controversial stance to take, but I hope you take the time to at least hear me out here and if you disagree? Well then that’s what the comments section is for. Never let it be said that this is an echo chamber for only my opinions

I used to think representation was still important I freely admit. I often talked about how we needed more female heroes and minority heroes in the entertainment industry both here and on other sites. In recent months however I have come to change my position and who knows by the end of this article you may too.

The great irony is that I’ve never actually seen Wil Wheaton talk about or try and bring any attention to any female led series such as Xena, Buffy, Charmed, Once Upon A Time, Resident Evil, Alien, Dark Angel, Dollhouse, Ghost Whisperer or The Bionic Woman. Then again in my experience the people who claim to care about diversity are often the people who actually have the least interest in female led series or films.

Why It Doesn’t Matter And When It Did Matter

That was then. This is now. A phrase the SJW’s seemingly don’t understand.

Representation is one of these third wave feminist complaints that I feel was once legitimate but no longer matters.

Back in the 50’s and the 60’s it was actually important as back then our society was genuinely racist, sexist and homophobic. It was perfectly legal to pay women less for the same work as a man in America until 1963 and in the UK until 1970.

Black people also throughout the 50’s and 60’s were treated as second class citizens in both the UK and the US.

They were segregated from white people in the US, deprived of many basic human rights and there was also widespread support for racist groups like the KKK.

Whilst things were better in the UK, racist attitudes still prevailed. There were signs saying “No Blacks Allowed” plastered everywhere and members of the Tory party such as Peter Griffiths tried to use racist feelings towards black people in order to get elected as late as 1964.

Now remember this was not some fringe group of nutters. This was one of the two main political parties in the UK relying on widespread racist feeling to win an election and promising to impose racist policies once it got in.

Finally homosexuality was illegal in the United Kingdom until 1967. Right up until it was legalised many of our most beloved entertainers who were secretly gay such as Frankie Howerd were terrified of being found out.

Any form of entertainment that featured women and minorities in strong roles back then was therefore important for a number of reasons.

To start with television series like Star Trek would often be among the few places a black actor or actress could actually get a role that wasn’t just as a maid or a bit part.

Also positive portrayals of women and minorities helped to counteract the genuine racist and sexist propaganda that was everywhere in our society.

A black child who saw a sign saying, “No Blacks Allowed” might feel better about themselves when they read a Dan Dare comic where the main white characters boss was a black man.

Of course that’s not to say these forms of entertainment won the civil rights movement, but they did have their place in the struggle for equality.

Dan Dare, Star Trek the Original Series and Classic Doctor Who, all of which gave strong roles to black characters and female characters were decades ahead of their time. They did break new ground in a lot of ways. Martin Luther King himself said that he felt Star Trek was important and encouraged Nichelle Nicholas not to quit the series.

Times change however. Homosexuality was legalised in 1967, the civil rights movement won, and second wave feminism managed to achieve many notable victories including equal pay for women.

Many third wave feminists still complain about the gender wage gap, but it has been debunked (including by many feminists such as Christina Hoff Sommers and Ayaan Hirsi Ali) time and time again. It does exist, but not for the reasons feminists claim.

Similarly there is no rape culture in western society either. Our justice system is far from perfect and sometimes there are horrendous miscarriages of justice (for all crimes, against both genders, not just rape.) Still to say that we live in a culture where rape and abuse of women is encouraged is ridiculous.

Most men in western societies are naturally predisposed towards wanting to help and protect women and rape is rightfully viewed as one of the worst crimes anyone can commit. The actual statistics and studies do not back up any claims of society normalising widespread sexual abuse of women.

Statistics Don’t Back Up Claims of Rape Culture

I’m not saying that our modern society is completely perfect, but the point is that most of the main battles for equality in the west were thankfully won in the later half of the 20th century. Quite frankly its an insult to anyone who did live in genuinely prejudiced times to try and pretend that things are anywhere near as bad today.

As a result of this we started to see more and more positive representation for women and other minorities to the point where by the 21st century I’d say that western audiences didn’t care at all what gender, race or sexuality a character on tv had.

Throughout the 60’s and the 70’s many strong roles for women on film and tv began to pop up such as The Bionic Woman, Wonder Woman 70’s series, Charlies Angels, and the Alien film series. Similarly more leading roles for black people began to emerge on film and tv such as Shaft.

For LGBT people meanwhile from the 70’s on there was more positive forms of representation, such as The Naked Civil Servant, a 1975 BAFTA winning drama which made a star of John Hurt and took us deep into how homophobic British society was. Many of the most popular entertainers and bands such as Queen and David Bowie’s acts had severe LGBT connotations as well.

By the end of the 90’s female heroes dominated the sci fi and fantasy market on television with Buffy, Xena and Charmed all being record breaking successes.

Until it was surpassed recently by Supernatural, Charmed was the longest running American fantasy series, whilst Buffy aside from being one of the longest running genre series was also one of the most influential too.

Xena meanwhile aside from being the most popular show in the world at the height of its success was so popular that they actually named a planet after her, albeit briefly.

On top of that most of theses series had strong roles for LGBT characters, such as Tara and Willow in Buffy, or Xena and Gabrielle themselves.

Other mainstream series such as Will and Grace also revolved around LGBT characters, whilst here in the UK many of our most popular mainstream entertainers such as Alan Carr, Graham Norton and John Barrowman are not only openly gay, but part of their entire act is being gay! On top of that all our most popular soap opera’s such as Coronation Street, Eastenders, etc (which are our most popular tv shows in general) have all had main LGBT characters.

Not exactly the same as the 60’s when Frankie Howerd, one of the most popular entertainers on British tv was scared at the prospect of his sexuality being discovered, as it would have meant the end of his career is it?

Now again I am not saying that this proves that racism, sexism and homophobia are gone completely from our modern society.

However at the same time I think it does go to show that at the very least in the entertainment industry people no longer care about a characters gender, race or sexuality.

Modern western audiences will accept anyone. Hence why Alan Carr in contrast to Frankie Howerd from the 60’s is able to make his sexuality part of his act. Hence why Beyonce is the most popular singer in all of Western society now.

Jay Z and Beyonce Are The Worlds Highest Paid Couple

In fact in both 2015 and 2014, out of the top 10 richest singers in the world, only two were heterosexual, white men, whilst in 2016 only 4 were white, heterosexual men.

See here Top 10 Richest Singers 2016/15/14

Now you might be thinking that there still aren’t as many black people on television as white people. You would be right about that, but that does not mean that it is because audiences or producers hate black people.

It is because there simply aren’t as many black people as there are white people in western society. Tell me how many white people are there in Bollywood films?

In the United Kingdom black people make up just 3 percent of the population. In the US they make up only 12 percent of the whole population, whilst in other western countries like France they make up 3-5 percent of the population and in Germany they are a mere 300,000 of a population which overall consists of 80.62 million people.

There are never going to be as many black people in western television series as white people. That does not mean that audiences will reject any black characters or performers that do appear as demonstrated with the record breaking success of Beyonce, or the enduring popularity of actors like Will Smith, Samuel L Jackson and Idris Elba.

The recent Oscars controversy where the award ceremony was accused of racism because it didn’t give as many awards to black performers as white ones was debunked, when it was shown that in proportion to how many black actors there actually were in the entertainment industry: There was a near perfect representation at the Oscars.

See here No the Oscars are not racist

Furthermore I don’t think there is really any racist or sexist propaganda to combat in our society anymore. If a political party were to use a poster that said “if you don’t want a nigger for your neighbour then vote for us.” That would rightfully sink their chances. Similarly if anyone hung a sign that said no blacks allowed outside a pub, then they would be charged with a hate crime.

Representation is only really a useful tool in combating overt prejudice and propaganda. The more subtle kind that people aren’t even aware of needs fought in different ways.

Whenever anyone says “I need to be able to see someone like me on television” I’m sorry but I don’t think that matters anymore.

I myself am part of a minority. I am Scottish. There are barely 5 million Scots in the UK and hey we have a history of being persecuted too such as the Highland Clearances.

However ultimately I, nor any Scots person I have ever known has ever cared about Scottish representation. Growing up, it never bothered me that virtually none of the people I watched on television were like me. I am not trying to virtue signal here, as no one else I knew growing up in Scotland was bothered either. The most popular television series in Scotland have generally tended to be English or American.

Are people going to complain about a lack of Scots voices on television? Are people going to point to the fact that there aren’t nearly as many Scottish heroes or actors as proof that institutionalised racism against us exists?

No of course not because people accept rightfully with us that there aren’t as many Scottish actors because there aren’t as many Scots.

So why then do we not accept that is the case with other minorities such as black people? Well that leads me on to my next point.

Why Do People Still Pretend It Matters?

Frank Hampson, the creator of Dan Dare.

One of the main reasons I think that people within the entertainment industry keep making out that representation does still matter is because they want to make themselves look better.

Gene Roddenberry, Frank Hampson and Terry Nation all gave strong roles for women and minorities in their work. Terry Nation produced possibly the first ever British genre series starring a woman, The Survivors, whilst both Gene Roddenberry and Frank Hampson presented a future in their most famous works (Dan Dare and Star Trek) where all the nations of the earth lived together. Roddenberry later broke new ground on American television by having the first ever interracial kiss on an American scripted television show.

All three writers and their works are still praised today for how progressive they were, and personally I think a lot of modern writers who harp on about representation just want to be seen in the same way. The only problem for them is, times have move on.

Nowadays audiences are completely accepting of black and female characters. Back in the 50’s, Frank Hampson could be controversial simply by having a black character, or a woman being a leading scientist. Even in the middle of the 60’s Gene Roddenberry could break new ground simply by having a black woman and a white man kiss.

Today would anyone even notice if there was a black character who was a scientist? Or if a black woman and a white man kissed each other on tv?

As a result these modern writers who want the kudos Gene Roddenberry got therefore have to lie that things are just as bad as they were in the 60’s, so that simply casting a black actor can be seen as a groundbreaking and brave thing.

Everybody wants to be Gene Roddenberry.

J.J. Abrams I feel is an example of someone like this. In this interview here, Abrams says he was disgusted by the fact that most of the actors at an award ceremony were white, and so he was going to rectify the “problem”.

See here J.J. Abrams On Diverse Star Wars Cast

The thing is the policy that Abrams has employed is to start with racist itself. He openly admitted to refusing to hire someone based on their skin colour.

Also I feel that its terrible to lump all whites together as privileged people who never suffer racism.

Ironically white skinned people have been the victims of some of the worst genocides and slave trades in the history of mankind, such as the 6 million Jews killed in the holocaust.

Image result for white slaves Islam

White Slaves of Barbary

On top of this even today white people are still victims of racism.

The victims of the recent grooming gang scandal in the United Kingdom, (which is the largest sexual abuse scandal the UK has ever seen,) were targeted specifically because they were white.

Here read this article were one of the perpetrators outright says that he considers white women to be nothing but trash.

White Women Are Only Good For One Thing

As A Grooming Gang Survivor I Was Called A White Slag

Ironically Frank Hampson and Gene Roddenberry didn’t simply write all white people off as being privileged. Roddenberry had among his crew a Russian, as at that point due to the cold war era paranoia there was plenty of hostile feeling towards Russians in America too. Checkov was designed to counteract this “Russophobia” as much as Uhura was meant to counteract the racism from organisations like the KKK.

In the UK meanwhile during the 50’s there was wide spread racism against the Irish, and Dan Dare counteracted this by having there be an Irish member of Dan’s team, Lex O’Mailey.

Roddenberry and Hampson cared about combating prejudices against all groups of people, white or not. The reason for this was because I feel that their desire for representation came from a genuine desire to help marginalised groups, rather than to simply virtue signal to their Hollywood friends like Abrams.

I might be doing Abrams a disservice, but his anger at the casting room being white just sounds so manufactured and for show. Also I don’t get what it is he thinks he is combating?

Does he really think that casting a black actor is going to be a big deal? If so he’s the one ironically living in the 50’s.

Was there any controversy over this movie where the two main heroes were black? Nope, so why would Abrams think he is breaking new ground by having a non white hero, 20 years later!

Sadly Abrams is not alone in this train of thought.

Emma Thompson recently after the famous no black actors at the Oscars controversy claimed that the Oscars are all decided by racist white men and even made a joke about how she would love to kill them all slowly.

Thing is it didn’t seem to bother her when she was winning an Oscar back in 1993.

Say what you will about Marlon Brando, but he stuck to his guns. He felt there was racism in Hollywood, so he outright refused to accept an Oscar.

Thompson on the other hand? She’s happy to accept one when it furthers her career, but then when its trendy to complain about the lack of diversity in Hollywood, she stabs the people helped boost her career in 1993 in the back.

Russell T Davies the producer of Doctor Who from 2005-10, I feel also falls under this category. He blasted a rival science fiction series called Primeval simply for having an all white cast.

Russell T Davies Blasts Primeval For All White Cast

Considering that Primeval is made and produced in the United Kingdom, its not so surprising that most or all of its cast would be white. Its not like there are no black people in it.

I very much doubt that the producers of Primeval turned down great black actors for their main characters because they were black. I believe that they cast all of the leads in Primeval because they thought they were the best actors for those characters.

Now I am sure Russell who never had a bad word to say about the cast (in fact he said the show all around was excellent) would agree. So what did he want the makers of Primeval to do then? Not to cast actors they thought were the best for those roles, simply because of the colour of their skin? That not a little… racist?

Some of the people who claim representation in the media matter may also do so out of fear too. Steven Moffat, Doctor Who’s current producer I think is an example of this. He has recently begun to go on about representation being important, but I think this is more to do with the severe feminist backlash he endured over his work being sexist.

I personally don’t think there was anything even remotely sexist about Steven Moffat’s work on Doctor Who or anything else. Sadly in this current “lets get offended by everything” climate he was tarred with that brush by the mainstream media, and since then he has by a bizarre coincidence become obsessed with representation.

Others meanwhile I think use representation not just to get kudos from their Hollywood elite pals, and the mainstream media, but to actively further their own careers. Nowadays a lot of people like to sell their product based on the fact that it has great representation for someone.

Take a look at the latest Ghostbusters movie. It was pretty much sold on being a film about female empowerment and representation. Even before the backlash began. Take a look at this publicity picture.

I have no objection clearly to an all female franchise. Look at Xena. The two leads are women, and most of her rogues and supporting cast are women too.

Xena however could stand on more than just being a “girl power” show. Sadly in the case of the Ghostbusters  the director Paul Feig was aware that being a remake of a much beloved 80’s classic, there was a danger that people would just dismiss it as yet another pointless reboot. So in order to counteract this inevitable criticism, Paul focused on the whole “its for representation” thing to sell it to audiences and also make it immune to criticism.

As we all know it backfired considerably. Even if the publicity team hadn’t gone to the effort of tarring all of their critics as sexist, then the simple fact that the movies main feature was that it offered representation wouldn’t have worked either..

Why would anyone think in this day and age that simply having female heroes was anything special? I grew up on nothing but female heroes.

Xena, Buffy, Charmed, Dark Angel, Heroic Trio,  Kill Bill, Nikita, Once Upon A Time, Charlie’s Angels, Alien film series, Wonder Woman tv series, Bionic Woman, Earth 2, Star Trek Voyager, The Dead and the Deadly, Tru Calling, Dollhouse, Underworld film series, Scream film series, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, 1,2, 5 and H20, Ghost Whisperer, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Friday the 13th, Day of the Dead, The Bride with White Hair, Terminator 1 and 2, Jessica Jones,  Survivors (original and remake), and Resident Evil.

Added to that there are plenty of shows about a male and female hero such as The X-Files, and The Avengers. Even in certain male led series such as Red Dwarf and Futurama, the female character is still the strongest, most intelligent and capable, like Leela and Kochanski.

So really with this in mind why would Ghostbusters 2016 stand out as anything important just for having female heroes? Answer, it wouldn’t, but Paul Feig is still going to pretend that it does to flog his otherwise mediocre remake of a beloved film. Lets be honest it had absolutely nothing else going for it.

Paul Feig I think shot himself in the foot, head and various other places career wise with the way he tried to promote this film.

Other people meanwhile who are career feminists like Anita Sarkeesian still make out that representation matters for the same reason they still cling on to other outdated examples of sexism. They need naive young people to believe sexism is everywhere, not just simply to further their careers like Paul Feig, but because it is the basis for their entire career overall.

If she wasn’t complaining about things being sexist, what would Anita Sarkeesian do for a living? Frank Hampson and Gene Roddenberry would still be iconic sci fi writers, even J.J. Abrams and Paul Feig would still be big shot directors. Anita however?

She needs the patriarchy for cash.

The great irony to this is that sexism is still a problem in many countries around the world, but people like Sarkeesian won’t comment on it. There is no money involved in that and they are too scared.

Ayaan Hirsi Ali for speaking out against Islamic countries treatment of women has received death threats and is forced to walk around with body guards.

People like Sarkeesian and big shot film directors however for all their talk of being “social justice warriors” would much rather pick a battle that has already been won and white knight over that to bask in the feminist and progressive praise, and if possible make a little bit of money out of it, but when it comes to tackling actual sexism? They are to put it bluntly, too shit scared to say a thing.

The great irony is as well that these people wouldn’t be pushing representation like Gene Roddenberry, Frank Hampson and Terry Nation were in the 50s and 60s. They all risked their careers and reputations in the process. The likes of Feig and Sarkeesian who only care about forwarding their careers would never take that risk

Now you might think, even if that is true, what difference does it make? Well that leads to my next point.

The Harm Still Caring About Representation Causes

Its a distraction

Representation I feel is often used by actual right wingers as a way of presenting themselves as left wing. They can distract us from the fact that nothing about the status quo is going to change. (It may even get worse) by saying “Look we have a woman/black person/LGBT person in a prominent position now, so that proves we’re moving forward even though we’re not.)

A notable example of this includes Hillary Clinton’s recent disastrous campaign for President. Hillary Clinton was quite possibly the biggest war monger in US politics.

She voted in favour of the war in Iraq, a potential war with Iran in 2005, destablised Honduras, overthrew Gaddaffi in Libya (which plunged the country into Anarchy and led to a global refugee crisis and the rise of Isis.) Clinton also wanted to impose a no fly zone over Syria which could have led to a conflict between the US and Russia.

HIllary Clinton: The Hawk and the Honduran Coup

The very idea that anyone would consider her a viable option for President is laughable. Yet Hillary was presented as the progressive candidate simply because she was a woman, and therefore would have been the first ever female President.

Never mind that Hillary Clinton is a danger to the planet, the fact that she’s a middle aged woman, and I’m a middle aged woman means you have to vote for her so I’ll be represented. Not at all a narcissistic view to have.

Obama meanwhile was no different. Hailed as an incredibly progressive choice because he was the first black President. Obama continued all of the war mongering foreign policies of his white predecessors, but the fact that it was now a black man deporting people, killing civilians with drones and starting illegal wars meant that it was apparently still more progressive.

War Mongering Obama

This just goes to show why representation shouldn’t be made out to be a big deal in the modern world, as ultimately it can be used as a way to not only dupe us into thinking things are changing, when they haven’t, but also as a way of silencing people.

John Pilger a genuinely left leaning journalist was famously ostracised by many on the left for daring to criticise Obama’s hawkish policies, as they viewed it as harmful to black representation.

John Pilger brilliantly runs through many examples of war mongers and right wingers in politics using representation as a shield against criticism.

It causes people to define themselves by their sexuality, race and gender

Representation is always presented to minorites as something they need in order to enjoy a particular product. If a character is gay/black or a woman, then gay/black or female viewers will automatically have to enjoy that character the most.

Now fair enough there are differences between men and women. I’m not saying that one is superior to the other, but there are differences, and therefore there are times where casting a woman or a man will bring a completely different dynamic to a work.

Similarly if a work of fiction is set in the past, or a less enlightened culture like Saudi Arabia, then making a character gay or an ethnic minority might bring a different dynamic to it aswell.

However the way representation is pushed nowadays makes it appear that gay and black audiences can ONLY enjoy a character if they are gay or black. This in turn essentially encourages minorities to define themselves solely by their minority status and nothing else.

Maybe, just maybe a gay viewer might not care about a characters sexuality? Maybe a gay man’s favourite hero is someone like James T Kirk for different reasons other than who he wants to sleep with? Maybe a gay character might look up to Batman because he is brave, noble and resourceful rather than because of who he wants to sleep with.

One of my favourite heroes is Xena, a bisexual female hero. How can that be if we have to see ourselves in every character on screen?

Ultimately whilst there should be no taboos about having LGBT characters or black characters, constantly making out that you have to have them, or else minorities can’t enjoy something just leads to gay and black people being seen as nothing but gay and black people, by themselves and everyone around them.

Imagine if I were to decide that I couldn’t enjoy Batman because he wasn’t Scottish. That was the one part of my personality that defined me to the point where unless Batman was Scottish I would be unhappy? Imagine if I got to the point where what I needed from a character the most was being Scottish over having say an interesting backstory, a compelling rogues gallery, exciting love interests etc? People would view that in a negative way, but when it comes to sexuality and skin colour its suddenly seen as a positive?

Ultimately no audience should be defined by one characterstic. You can’t just be expected to satisfy gay audiences by crowbarring in a gay character, but sadly that is what those who push representation encourage. If you’re gay the first thing you should care about is who a character sleeps with in order to like them.

It has compromised many television series and films

I feel that many writers and producers nowadays often focus on representation above other important things like you know actually having a story.

The latest Ghostbusters film as a classic example of this. Its plot is paper thin. Its monsters are dull and uninspiring. The main focus of the film was simply that it was offering women representation. As a result of this not only were the monsters just tossed in as an after thought, but the films jokes and dialogue tended to focus on the fact that its leads were women more than anything else.

“I don’t know if this is a lady thing or a black thing but I’m mad as hell!”

Added to that when you care about filling diversity quota’s above all else then you don’t always end up hiring the best actors, actresses, or writers either.

Take a look at Doctor Who, the worlds longest running science fiction series.

Steven Moffat recently cast a woman as the Doctors archenemy the Master. The only reason Steven Moffat did this was for representation. Not only did he want to give women a strong role via the Master, but he also hoped that a female Master would pave the way for a female Doctor too.

Moffat however went one step further by having the female Master, Missy be actively in love with the Doctor, again for LGBT representation. This was a complete betrayal to what the character was meant to stand for.

Colin Baker who played the 6th Doctor sums up the appeal of the Master brilliantly in this quote.

“My favourite enemy is the Master, because Sherlock Holmes has his Moriarty, and while most monsters have no particular desire to destroy the Doctor, the good thing about the Master is that it’s a personal matter, so there’s great opportunity for confrontation.”

However now all of that has been tossed in the bin, as the female Master is in love with the Doctor and actually wants to win him back as her boyfriend more than anything else.

The Master in the 1970’s. A relentless and implacable foe of the Doctor that simply would not rest even as his world was crumbling apart around him until he had killed his archenemy.

The Master in the 2010’s after feminists managed to get their claws into the Doctor Who franchise. Anyone who says she’s believable as the villain in the above video is A/ lying B/ an SJW or C/ has never seen Classic Who.

Furthermore in addition to this the Masters other main motivation aside from killing the Doctor was to conquer the Universe. Missy however does not seek any kind of power as all she cares about is winning the Doctor, her “boyfriend” back. In fact in her first appearance, she gives up an army of unbeatable Cybermen just to win the Doctor back!

Its terrible to essentially throw out the Masters main motivation and development as a character as it basically makes it look like it didn’t matter.

Its like rewriting it that Magneto doesn’t care about Mutants rights and that his main motivation was to fuck Jean Grey instead.

Also I might add its a huge come down for the Master too. Before this used to be a villain that was desperate to reshape all of creation in his own image, where as now he is relegated to being basically the heroes jealous ex?

Finally on top of ruining the character Steven Moffat’s need for representation also led to him casting an actress who was not right for the Master.

Michelle Gomez who played the female Master, Missy is a good actress but she wasn’t right for the character of the Master, because, well he’s a man! It would be like casting Jack Nicholson as say Supergirl. Yeah Jack is great, but he wouldn’t exactly be right for that part.

Imagine that you are the casting director for Doctor Who series 8 and you are told that the Master will be returning to the show and you have to cast that character. Now leaving aside representation, political correctness etc, imagine you are casting this character based 100 percent on who the right actor for the role is.

Remember THIS is the character of the Master.

Okay that’s the character. Now who are you going to cast, based on who is the right person for the role out of these 6 actors. Charles Dance, Simon Templeman (voice of Doctor Doom), Robert Carlyle, David Warner (voice of Ra’s Al Ghul), Jason Watkins and Michelle Gomez.

I don’t think there is ANYONE who would cast her in the role over those 5 guys based solely on who was the best for the part.

The only reason that Michelle was miscast as the Master and that the Master was made into the Doctors lover instead of his archenemy was all for representation.

I might add that since Doctor Who started to pander to the need for representation, then its viewers have sunk.

See here. Doctor Who’s Ratings Fall To Record Low

Comic books have also suffered greatly for this desperate need for representation too. Marvel have begun to replace many of their male characters with female ones. Wolverine, Tony Stark and Thor have all been replaced with female counterparts as part of a move to bring greater diversity to the Marvel universe.

Now understandably many fans have been upset with this. Not because they can’t stand female heroes, but because they like these characters and therefore don’t want to see them be replaced with other people.

There have been examples of these characters being replaced by other men, and the fans not liking them, such as Damian Wayne taking over from Bruce Wayne or Doc Ock taking over from Peter Parker as Spider-Man.

Still just like with the Ghostbusters movie, anyone who doesn’t like this trend has been called a sexist. The female Thor was even given a strawman anti feminist to fight.

In a time when Marvels readers should be higher than ever due to the mainstream success of the movies, they are enduring record losses instead.

Comics You Have Your Diversity So Why Aren’t You Buying Them

Why Female Thor Is Selling So Poorly

Its got nothing to do with readers rejecting female heroes in general. If that were the case why did larger audiences lap up Xena and Buffy and Charmed and Once Upon A Time? Why does the Wonder Woman trailer have a near universal approval rating? Its because people don’t want their favourite heroes replaced for some bullshit diversity.

Marvel don’t care however. They simply want to get brownie points for diversity. Introducing a new character however takes time and effort to make them one of the all time popular characters.  Wolverine for instance was introduced much later than many of the rest of the X-Men, and he ended up becoming the most popular one, but only after, many, many years and writers.

It provides terrible representation for minorities

Ironically I feel that casting actors for diversity is a terrible way to represent people. Its essentially saying that the only way they can succeed is if the system is rigged for them rather than on their own merit.

Take a look at this example from the New Doctor Who. Here Steven Moffat has openly said he cast the new companion Pearl Mackie solely to have a black actress in the show.

Steven Moffat on Doctor Who Diversity: We Need To Do Better

Now I am not saying Pearl Mackie will be a bad companion. I haven’t seen her in action yet. For all I know she might be good, but sadly Steven Moffat has said before she even has a chance to start that she is only there to tick boxes.

I had this baffling idea that if we just threw open each part to everybody then it would all work out in the end. I put my faith inexplicably in the free market. It doesn’t work. You’ve got to gauge where you’re looking for the talent“.

-Steven Moffat on casting Pearl Mackie

How can anyone say that that is good for black people? Apparently black people can’t ever succeed when being forced into a fair competition with white people. So Moffat had to exclude all white people, or “gauge” where he got the talent from in order to cast a black person?

And what has been accomplished by doing that? A black actor is now in Doctor Who? Yeah its not like its ever had a black companion before is it?

I honestly don’t think that you have to give black actors any role for representation. Black actors in the modern world, can get any part (excluding certain historical figures) they want. Provided they are right for it.

Look at Red Dwarf, a classic British sci fi comedy where half the cast is black (and again no one noticed!)

Originally Alan Rickman was considered for the role of Dave Lister. Rickman was eager to play the role. He called the script one of the most original and intelligent scripts he had ever seen.

However Craig Charles a black man won the role, simply because he was the best man for the part.

Alan Rickman was one of the greatest British actors, but he would not have been good as Lister. His portrayal of Lister would have been a posh, somewhat uptight character, which would have been too similar to Arnold Rimmer, Lister’s bunk mate.

Craig Charles however brought a slobbish, blokish, every day quality to Lister which contrasted wonderfully with the prissy uptight Rimmer and created a perfect odd couple squabbling brothers dynamic.

So yes in the open market a black guy did beat a white guy because he was the best for the role. I might add the black guy Craig Charles wasn’t even really an actor. He was a poet! A fucking poet beat out one of the most acclaimed, and versatile actors for the role of a lead in a sitcom because he was the best person for the part, and race didn’t enter into it for either.

Now I don’t think Red Dwarf is such a special show. Don’t get me wrong I adore it, but what I mean is I don’t think that its makers are the only non racist people in the entertainment industry. In fact I think that its probably typical in terms of how things are cast. The best actor gets the gig. Who gives a fuck about skin colour? The best person for the job is the only fair way to do it.

Also more importantly I feel that when these characters are there to be “the black character” or “the female character” then they are often written as such which is terrible.

Look at Class the recent Doctor Who spin off whose creator Patrick Ness has often spoken about how important representation is.

Patrick Ness “The Only People Who Don’t Think Representation Matters Are The People Who Have Always Been Represented

Patrick Ness “Lack of LGBT Representation Bothers Me

Now Class’s black character Tanya Adeola, often complains about white people, and how lucky they are. Compare her to Lister from Red Dwarf, who has many fights with Rimmer, his white bunk mate, yet not once is either men’s race mentioned.

TANYA: White people.
APRIL: White people what?
TANYA: Always so optimistic. Always so certain things are going to work out for you. Oh, well, because they usually do.
APRIL: My dad tried to kill me when I was eight.
TANYA: But you got your mum up walking again. Typical white-person happy ending.

LISTER: You never said much about your father.
RIMMER: No.
LISTER: You must have been pretty close.
RIMMER: Close.
LISTER: Was it very close?
RIMMER: Close. (Pause) I hated him. I detested his fat stupid guts, the
pop-eyed, balding git.
LISTER: What?
RIMMER: He always wanted to join the Space Corps — be an officer. But
they wouldn’t take him because he was an inch below regulation height.
One inch. I had three brothers. When we were young he bought a
traction machine so that he could stretch us. By the time my brother
Frank was eleven he was six foot five. Every morning he’d measure us
and if we hadn’t grown, back on the rack.
LISTER: Sounds like he had a screw loose.
RIMMER: I don’t think he had one screw fully tightened, to be perfectly
honest with you. He had this fixation that we all had to get into the
Space Corps. At meal times he’d ask us questions on astronavigation.
If we got them wrong — no food.
LISTER: God, Rimmer, how did you cope with that?
RIMMER: I didn’t. I nearly died of malnutrition.
LISTER: I had no idea. I thought you adored your parents.
RIMMER: When I was fourteen I divorced them.
LISTER: What?
RIMMER: I took them to court. I got paid maintenance until employment
age and access every fourth weekend to the family dog.
LISTER: So why are you so completely blown away about him dying then?
RIMMER: Oh, it doesn’t mean to say I don’t respect him, didn’t look up to
him. It was only natural — he was my father.
LISTER: There’s nothing natural about your family, Rimmer.
RIMMER: It’s just I always wanted just once, just once, for him to say to
me, “well done.”
LISTER: For what?
RIMMER: For something, for anything. I wanted him to be proud of me,
just once.

See what I mean? Which black character comes off as more likable there?

The funny thing is Lister and Rimmer normally hate each other. Yet Lister still shows Rimmer more empathy and compassion than Tanya shows to someone who is meant to be her best friend!

Needless to say if I were black I’d not only despise Tanya. I’d actually find it offensive, that Patrick Ness thought how black people wanted to be represented on tv was as whiny, self obsessed racists who still see someone whose dad tried to kill them as being privileged, simply because they’re white!

I also find a phrase like “typical white person happy ending” to be without doubt the most racist phrase ever used in Doctor Who. I’m sure any of the grooming gang survivors would have really appreciated that episode Patrick Ness. Or do they not deserve representation?

Similarly compare these scenes from Xena a show by people who didn’t care about representation, only in making a fun, camp, adventure series, to the modern day version of Supergirl, a show by people who care a lot about representation.

Which one of these two series do you think has better female characters?

The great irony is that when you highlight how great it is that you have black or female leading characters in the actual work itself, it actually looks like it belongs in the 50’s more than something that doesn’t have that diverse a cast like Primeval.

When you look at something from the 50’s or 60’s like say Dan Dare you can see how its more aware that it has female or minority heroes than a later progressive work like Once Upon A Time is.

For instance Professor Peabody, Dan’s leading female scientist often has to deal with sexism from people who don’t take her seriously in her profession because of her gender. That was okay for the time it was released in 1950. Back then it was genuinely unusual for audiences to see a woman in that kind of role.

A woman would also genuinely struggle in the real world to be taken seriously in the type of profession Peabody was in back then too, so having her shut down Sir Hubert’s sexism was a good thing and represented real problems women would have endured.

However that was the point by the time of Red Dwarf and Xena as we have seen no one cared anymore about a woman being the hero, or a black guy being the main character. So Xena didn’t need to say “Hey look how amazing it is that there is a woman hero” and similarly Red Dwarf has never even mentioned Lister’s race or the fact that he and his main love interest, Kristine Kochanski are in an interracial relationship.

Now however things like Supergirl and Class have actually dragged us back to the 50’s where everybody has to act amazed at the prospect of a female hero and the female hero has to remind us that she is a woman all the time, and every black character has to tell us how hard it is being black, and how every white person is lucky to be white.

If you’ve set something in the 50’s or a less enlightened time then fair enough, you will most likely have to comment on the racism and the sexism of the time if you’re hero is a woman or minority. The likes of Supergirl and Class are set in modern day however, so they have no excuse.

It leads to people being fired

In an effort for greater diversity, certain companies have begun to fire white men from their jobs in order to give minorities more opportunities.

Here are some examples.

Now Presenter Fired For Diversity

Man Fired From Autumn Watch For Being Too White

I find it funny in a way that people like Gene Roddenberry and Terry Nation were able to give women and black people strong and heroic roles in genuinely racist and sexist times without having to fire people from their jobs. In the modern world meanwhile where there is a true meritocracy, the BBC still can’t give minorities jobs without employing racist policies towards white people.

No one is entitled to a job based on skin colour or gender. No one deserves to be excluded from one either whether they are white or black.

Conclusion

I have no problem with television series starring non whites. Some of my absolute all time favourite series star female characters. Still at the same time something that has a cast made up of one gender, such as Supernatural, or Xena, or Charmed, or Bottom, or Ab Fab, does not deserve to be called sexist, or changed to be artificially more diverse

Diversity and representation only matters if we are living in a time when people are being excluded and treated as inferiors because of who they are.

Ultimately however whilst I am not saying our society is perfect, thankfully we have moved on from the dark days of the 60’s and the 70’s. I feel that in the entertainment industry at least and in terms of what audiences are willing to accept, we do live in a society where any type of person can be accepted.

Representation has served its purpose in the fight for equality. Its time just to let the meritocracy judge everyone in a fair way and try and find other ways to tackle the still very real prejudice in the world today.

Let me know what you think in the comments below.
